 Piston wear acceptable? I'm going through a rebuild....new rods, cam, heads. Initiated because of low compression and blow by.
Upon disassembly, both pistons had about .028 wear on the back side of the cylinder, maybe caused be overheating in that area because I ran it without all the shrouds.
There's a long story about why, but ended up re sleeving the block to stock size. Have all gaskets, rings, etc just waiting on the cam. Anyway, as I'm cleaning up these pistons getting ready, I'm looking at this wear and wondering if they are ok to reinstall. They were rocking in the cylinder with all the wear I guess, and I'm assuming that with the new sleeves, honing, and rings they won't now, but I'm too deep ($$$) into this to cheap out now if these need to be replaced. I would only replace with stock, so please don't let the aftermarket thing come into play.
What do you guys think?

Re: Piston wear acceptable? If it were mine and I had replaced everything you had I would put new ones in, but thats me. i would hate to cut a corner now and it come back to bight me in the ass.

Re: Piston wear acceptable? Kinda where I'm at jc, just kind of sucks to wait two more weeks until another payday to start putting it together. This "two week" work on my heads started in February and I haven't gotten them back yet.

Re: Piston wear acceptable? Any time you re-sleeve a cylinder, you should also replace the pistons and rings.

Re: Piston wear acceptable? I'd go back with new ones, and something better than stock at that. Has anybody checked to see if wiseco, probe or another aftermarket piston manufacturer will build these things?
I'd be willing to bet there's a motorcycle piston out there that may work if the compression height and pin size are the same, and even at that, the wrist pin bore can be machined or sleeved.

Re: Piston wear acceptable? Kohler makes an OEM piston that is .050 over (mm not thousandths). Wonder if is notice the additional displacement?
