 1448 with 23sd?
Looking to change up boats soon and I was thinking about going to a 1448 and mounting my Copperhead 23hp on it. Not sure if this is too short of a hull. I typically run 2 people total and a light load. My boat right now is a 1544 and it rides with the nose pretty high when I'm solo. Or should I try and find a 1548 or 1648? I've looked into getting a hull built but it's too expensive right now so a jon boat hull is my only option. Thanks

i don't think so my uncle has a 1442 with a 27 pd and thats a little heavy but the copperhead is alot lighter so i think you'd be fine.

I ran a 23 mbsd on a 1442 for a while then put it on a 1748 and it was a different world. Ran a lot better and hauled a better load.
If I were you I would be leaning toward a 15-16x48

^ this if you getting a new hull do it right. I run a 1744 with a 23 and is night and day from the 1448 I had. I would go at least 16'
1644-48 17' or 18' in a 40-44" bottom. The lower hp SDs seem to run better with longer skinnier hulls. I have no problem taking my 17' everywhere i took my 1448

 Re: 1448 with 23sd?
With a stock motor I was seeing 22-23 deep water solo basically empty boat 2 batteries trolling motor. 2 people good size fishing load was 20-21 deep water. 2 man hunt load 80lb blind 75 lb lab 4dz deeks and all the other guns gear was steady 19 shallow water. Happy with the room and its able to tote a bigger load more comfortable and faster than the shorter boat. This is a MB HD honest speeds on 1744 with full welded floor. The copperhead are light faster motors from what I've seen on here.

 Re: 1448 with 23sd?
I'm running a mud buddy 23 hd now. It's on a 17x42 alweld skiff. It's a nice boat but drafts way to much water. I'm hoping to buy a new boat this summer. I was thinking a 17 true mud hull would be to big but your running the same speeds I am solo and faster with 2 people. Out of curiosity what were you running when you had the 14x48?

 Re: 1448 with 23sd?
Full load without dog 13-14. Me alone purpoised like shit need another guy up front even with gas up front. Motor was too heavy. I have the alweld mud boat smooth bottom no ribs tapered chine so that what helps me a bit. I wouldnt ever consider going smaller unless I got a fiberglass skiff and paddle for certain hidden spots with no launch. I got rid of the 1448 like a fat bitch on a blind date I wouldnt go smaller again. The speeds above were mainly stock gutted exhaust adv timing key added which gave me less than 2 mph increase basically stock though.

Damn there's no way I would've expected that. I figured a 14 would've been fast and light. Well that changes my game plan completely but I appreciate the advice glad I won't waste my money on a 14 now.

 Re: 1448 with 23sd?
Just as an example... Phowler's best performing hull with the 23 Copperhead is the 1744. I have one with a 23 Dixie and it will do 23 mph all day long with a 2 man hunting load.
