I have a Beavertail LT. Looks like the lower grease seals went out last season. I have replaced the lower seals and still have a leak. The shaft has no play, however the lower seal housing gets to hot to touch after it has been running for some time. I'm going to replace the lower bearings and put new seals in again. If this does not fix the grease leak does anyone here have any ideas? I'm thinking maybe the bearings are bad and things are getting too hot in the lower end which is still causing the grease leak.

What grease do you use?

Is your shaft bent?

Marine grade nlgi#2 which Beavertail said is ok to use. It does not appear the shaft is bent. I pulled the bearings and it sounds like two out of the three have some drag. Waiting for parts. I guess if that does not work I will look at replacing the shaft.

Your shaft may have some "whip" in it and may appear to be straight. Do you have any vibration?

It seems I have always had vibration with the thing even when it was new.

I also have a Beavertail LT my first one had a 24hp Honda ran it for 11 years and only added grease to tail once but I did go thru props because of sand . Back to your problem I now have a 35hp vanguard Beavertail LT. I bought nit used it was two years old. Ran it for a year no problems except in cold weather that grease thickens up to make for a little hard starting so I decided to pull out shaft and clean out grease and put in Amziol. it is then when I noticed that the previous owner or dealer did not put the nylon bushing on first before jamb nut. what happened was jamb nut moved up against lower seal housing cap and cut a hole thru it and took seals out. I will attach a few pictures but check this out. Always replace seals anytime you take bearing housings apart. let me know your outcome or if I can possibly help you in any other way. oh be sure to have lower seal housing unscrewed from lower bearing housing when you grease or you will blow out seals. Beavertail only has one grease zert and you pump in grease till you see it come thru lower bearings. Other manufactures have release valves on opposite end of zert.

First of all when you grease a Beavertail LT you need to have the lower seal housing separated from the lower bearing housing, then you pump grease in zert till you see the grease coming out through lower bearings.If you leave the lower seal housing attached to bearing housing when greasing you will blow out seals. Other manufactures have a secondary relief valve on opposite end of grease zert that you open up to allow grease to come out so you don't blow seals. I have had a beavertail LT for 14 years two different models. If I can help you in any other way let me know , I run Amzoil Synthetic oil in my 35hp vanguard and Amzoil grease in my shaft. I live in Wisconsin and I encounter a lot of cold weather Hunting just starts a lot better with Synthetic. Also all those mud motors have some type of different noise. is it normal to see grease coming out the first nylon spacer or does that indicate a bad seal? Bought a 13hp used and have seen some leakage there.. this beavertail is old. has the grease fitting in the middle top of the shaft and another at the joint by the motor. Just curious since this topic is pretty good. Live in Wi also and I like your ideas of the synthetic! getting ready for the miss opener and the run to North Dakota!

How many times are y'all pumping the grease gun? It isn't hard to blow those seals out by adding too much grease

I have replaced the three lower bearings and both lower seals. When I replaced the bearings and seals I pumped grease without the seal cap on and greased until it came out of the lower bearings. Still oozes grease past the seals when it gets warmed up. Grease is not throwing it is oozing out of the seals. Shaft issue????

I have had no issues with lower seals leaking after I replaced and regreased. I do not have a press so I took my housings to a machine shop and had seals pressed in. But I,m sure you can tap them in with a socket , it just seemed to me that there was such a shallow shoulder on the seals that I didn't want to damage it.. Also are you putting the seals in facing the right direction? when looking at them this could get confusing , maybe they are facing the wrong way. One thing I did notice after putting Amzoil in shaft and motor that my idle speed went up 250 to 300 RPM's that needs to be adjusted, coincidental I don't know . Also when greasing shaft it takes a lot more grease than a guy thinks keep pumping till it oozes out of bearings , my grease zert is toward lower e half of shaft. If I can find a picture of seal direction I'll post it

DKerns I can offer you this, call Beavertail @ 877-466-8837 Ask for Kevin he is a mechanic in R&D shop, I have had very good luck with him . He should be able to fix your problem good luck, I would very much like to here the outcome if I ever have this problem

DKearns wondering how you faired on those seals

Still have a small leak. Season starts here in a week and a half. Talked with a guy who builds his own mud motors here. He suggested I just run it for the season and put a few pumps of grease in it after every time out. He will look at it in the spring. Thanks for asking.
