I've had my Miller Pro Hobby for about 7 years and just replace the batteries and headgear about 6 months ago. Use it 3-4 days out of the week.

Sugar scoop or wendys pancake, either one works good for me. Dont go and spend 300 dollars on a hood with all them gadgets, hard to find clear lenses and pita to fool with when they break. Regular sugar scoop and pancake take the same clear lense and can get em at ANY weld shop.

I've been thinking about getting a pancake for outside work. I find myself trying to get in the perfect spot so I can see sometimes.

Sugar scoop all the way. You can even buy an auto lense for about $60.

If all you are going to do is use it a few times a year I would get a regular ole hood with a fixed shade.

Or one of those cheap one from harbor freight.

Aint no sense in buying a $200 hood to collect dust.

I went through a bunch of shields before I found the ones I like the pancake let's air get to my face while I'm welding instead of a regular shield where it's closed all the way in and welding pipe all day getting air to your face is a definate plus.

Sugar scoop with a fixed shade, auto darkening will leave you in a bind if you weld in tight spaces. Or in a fab shop somebody else's arc with throw it and you can see shit. Pure glass is the way to. If you are gonna buy an auto darkening I know several with the Lincoln vikings that like em.

Won't be welding a whole lot. I have one main project and then it will be just every once in a while welding. I like the auto darkening feature. Looked at the millers...what's the difference in the performance and the elite?

I have a speedglas auto that I use most of the time. I have however come to love the fixed hood with a old gold plated lens in aqua color my dad gave me. I like the auto for TIG welding.

Big fan of my snap-on auto darkening with 180 degree viewing. Pricy, but compact and awesome for tight places and when you run out of room to turn your head you can still see because of the 180 screen.

The wens lens ultra blue is badass but if you're use to welding with a shade 10 go 11 it's pretty bright
