Post Mississippi River Freeze Out?
I was planning to hunt Pool 7 out of Onalaska the weekend of 15-16. But... but looks as if the first poilar vortex of the year is going to drop temps way below freezing. Can I assume the backwaters, and the ways to the river, will be frozen solid? Is there another way to get on the river there?

There are maps that show all of the public ramps on and along the river. I can't believe it will be frozen by then. I'm planning to hunt up north that same weekend on a lake.

It might be froze but you should be able to bust it out.

We had a little skim ice last weekend, nothing to be concerned with. With as many hunters as there are out, ice has little chance of forming to the point of locking it up at this time. If your defintely hitting Pool 7 it is best to launch by 3:30 and grab a spot on the line, the birds are real stale.

Winter is coming and so are the big ducks.. Snow tommrow, with the week ahead highs will be in teens and twentys lows single digits, will be heading for the river by Thursday, cause all the local puddles will be locked up.. Great pic Schmitt!!

Our forecast here is looking at about 10 days of right at or below freezing. Gonna have to start using up some of my vacation time a little earlier than expected!

^^^ That's about what ours is May be a few less depending on the weather man ,but by the week of thanksgiving it back into the thirty' s and not much snow in the forecast, rivers won't freeze and plenty of feed to keep birds around for a long time..

I just got back from the Mississippi (shot two mallards, a drake wigeon and drake greenwing teal). The drive had a few inches of snow and it snowed most of the time we were there. The snow wasn't really melting when it hit the water so it has to be right at 33 degrees or so.

Now we're supposed to have lows around 10 and highs only in the low 20's for the next 4-5 days. I think the season might close for me about 3 weeks early :(

Not liking this. I'm supposed to have a long weekend in Ferryville but not until the 21st.

I can imagine if you are getting the birds that we are on the Yellowstone river, This is absolute nuts right now.. If this state had any amount of duck hunters in it.. The last 3 days would have sounded like world war 3.. But I have not seen a soul in the last two years, so duck dynasty has not hurt me yet.. And probably won't.. temps warming up after tommrow, and by next weeknd we are back in the 40/ low 50's..

I wouldn't make a special trip to do it. I lived in NW Montana for a while and I loved it.

the ice forms on the dekes in about 1 1/2 hour if you don't clear it they'll flip over from being top heavy

Water is locking up like a vice up here in ND - end of week only thing open will be Devils Lake and the Missoiuri River. Watched thousands and thousands of birds exit out of Canada and fly through us on Sun, you boys down South get ready. The rest of my hunting will be on land.

16" of snow fell mon-tue in northern wis. All small water locked up tighter than a frogs ass. Checked all the big lakes and flowages this morning and never saw a duck. Few sawbills floating around but that's it. All landings are pretty much unusable unless you plow them out. But with the lack of birds it's not worth the work.
