Post GDSD EFI
Just heard from Bart that the GDSD is available now with EFI on the 35hp for an additional $550.

I have my order in right now for a 35hp GDSD on an 1844 GD. What say ye fine gentlemen? Is it worth the additional money?

I've always been a carb guy and figured EFI was just one more thing that could get messed up in the marsh. Plus my plan is to go Mikuni when the engine warranty is up. What do you do to mod an EFI? Don't know much about them.

Thoughts? cuss and discuss........

congrats on new rig!

I think you'll like it as is - I didn't have any fuel related trouble with EFI this last season, and the smooth 800 rpm idle is awesome. Did you ask them if the 37 EFI comes with their "new valves and seats" like the 810 cc?

I had Bart put me down for one. My 1860 Split seat SD boat will be ready the first week or two of April. It's going to cost me an additional 1050 though since I was originally getting a demo motor from Bart as part of my deal. I'll loose my $500 discount and add the $550 EFI. I think it will be worth every red cent though. I kicked it around today when he told me too and after thinking it over and crunching the numbers. I think it's well worth it in the long run.

If it shits the bed, it's got a warranty. ;)

When the day comes that the warranty is up and I get the itch to start changing the engine setup around - what do you do with an EFI?

Like I said - I'm a carb guy. I understand carbs. I can work on carbs. I don't know crap about EFI.

I'm basing all of this on my old pickups (67 chevy with a 350 and 4 barrel carb I can tear down and fix under the shade tree versus the 2005 computerized demon I have to take the shop every time she has a hiccup). Maybe a small boat motor might be a completely different story.....???

There is supposed to be tuning software in the works for the Briggs system. I have always been a carb guy myself And had initial reservations about reliability etc... But after really considering it, Warren Coco isn't going to release something that is unreliable in any way. The most I'll ever do to the engine mod-wise is probably a gutted stock exhaust and really mild cleanup on the heads and keep the valve sealing as they should. I don't think what I have planned will be out of the realm of operation for the Briggs ECM.

That being said, I've dealt with numerous types of tuning software for bigger EFI systems, and will be very comfortable with the Briggs system in a short amount of time Id assume. If it's available to the general public for less than a smuggled child, I'll most likely own it.

Is the efi throttle response comparable to the mikuni carb

I run 800 RPM's at idol in the water. With EFI or a tuned Mikuni you can run closer to 650. I would love for my rig to idol at 650 while being stock and having the earranty. EFI will help with not having a clutch. It would be much easier to crab with a slower idol out of a GD

For you self described "carb guys" I'm almost 75 and my first carbs were twin Stromberg 97's on a 51 ford flathead V8. If I can play with EFI anyone can. If you truly are interested in learning about EFI get the Briggs customer education training workbook titled Electronic Fuel Injection Essentials. It is so well written even I can understand it. The most difficult thing is the new terms, but once you get those down it is a case of applying what you already know to an engine that combines oxygen with fuel and is ignited with a spark. The Briggs and PD systems even have fault isolation which I never saw on a Holley.

I would love to see how the EFI is compared to my carb motor. I bet the throttle response is outstanding. I already have a good hole shot. This should take it up a bit
