Post Chevrolet or Dodge diesel???
With my 2011 dmax being totaled out I need a new truck. I absolutely love my dmax. However I might consider a Cummings this time. Sometime in the near future I will be getting a new truck.
What's your thought on a Dodge over Chevy or vise versa?

Dodge/cummins is a great engine wrapped in a piece of crap. Stick with the Chevy.

I like them both. Although I haven't owned either I've rode in both.

I think both trucks are good but my next truck will be a 1 ton cab and chassis Ram with a Cummins. And it will be standard.

But the new GMC 3/4 tons look sharp with a leveling kit.

I think either would be a good choice.

My name says it all, the only reason dodge is doing half decent, because they made a knock off of the Allison trans. In all reality though all these Damn things are made of plastic. Only thing the Dodge or ford have over chevy is the straight axle up front.

I don't know if you're looking at buying new or not but there is really good rebates on new duramaxes right now. I'm looking at buying a new one as soon as I find exactly what I want. I agree with flint, cummins is awesome but the truck is cheap.

I've had both, I'm a diesel mechanic by trade and I've had dodge trucks since 2004. I've bought 7 of the dodge trucks and have run them all up to 300k except the last 2 cab and chassis the 2012-2013 trucks seemed to have some problems. Had to replace the engine in one and the rear end in the other. All was under warranty. So that got me worried. I purchased a Chevy cab and chassis in 2014 and have 100k on it now. No issues. So I bought a 2015 this year and so far they have been good. Chevy rides better. Fuel mileage is close to same stock. Chevy has a slight bit more power stock. Dodge has more room in cab.

The dodge still has issues with the front suspension. It has improved with the radius arm design, but it still have its issues mainly because the cummins is so HEAVY.
The new 2015 GM trucks are WAY nicer than the previous trucks. Same drivetrain, but different body and interior.

Thanks guys! Whatever I buy will be brand new. As a LEO we are beat into submission with vehicle upkeep and maintenance. This filters on into my POV. I buy new since 1987 just so I know the history of my vehicles. With a diesel I will not buy used as you have no idea of what it has been used for. Used prices are up there for diesels so I will opt for the new.
I am overly more than satisfied with my dmax. I posed this question as to I hear so many happy Cummings owners. I am 80/20 going with the Chevy as happy I was with mine.
I just picked up my wife's 2015 Dodge 1500 Eco diesel a couple weeks ago. We ordered it out of St. Louis.
It's really nice however for pulling my heavy boats I need a 3/4ton diesel truck.
Keep your thoughts coming. I was 100 percent Chevrolet. ....

Randy, No lie the cummins is a MOCHINE to haul with, A new truck nowadays has its warranty periods that will fix any issues. Go take a ride in both, Do not short change yourself. Sorry to hear you totaled your past truck bud.
Are the UCAs still good ???

I know a couple of people that work their trucks had Dodge, switched to Dmax and then went back to Dodge. If you're mainly using as a daily driver and not really working it and want more bells and whistles, Chevy is fine. I can't speak for the racing crowd or young guns that want to just make smoke, the guys I know basically leave them stock and use them working on farms and work. Overall the 3rd and 4th generations Dodge trucks are freaking tough all around. The 4wd components are virtually bullet proof. They have had and still have some steering issues but what truck with a solid front axle hasn't? Leave it stock and there's no worries. I have a 2010 PW, it is gas but the same driveline as the Diesel and I've been on 35" and now 37" tires on stock suspension. I use it, I dont wash it, I pull with it, I bury it, race it, jump it, whatever and finally have to change out the upper ball joints at 120K. The frame is wicked stout, you can flex it to the max and there's no frame twisting at all. The Dmaxes from driveline is weak comparing. I personally feel you get more "truck" for your money with a Dodge and more "luxury" with the Chevy. Depends on what you are looking for the most.

My truck had 65000 ÷-miles on it . Most miles from pulling a 30ft tri axle trailer with my commfish boat on it. My truck was a LT model. It was a nicely equipped work truck.
I know the Cummins crowd are rock solid with their Dodges. That is why I am going to test drive one this week.
What's the difference with the straight axle vs the Chevy front end?
The only mudding I'm doing is when the river drops out from flood stage and I have to mud my way in and out from a boat ramp.

Post Re: Chevrolet or Dodge diesel???
I have the first year model dodge with the 6.7 cummins in it and a manual tranny. In stock form it was stout and did all i need it to do and more. I still have it today and a few years ago when I got my company truck I pulled the bed off of it and built a flat bed for it and rigged it out. It hasnt been stock since about a year after i got it, i did a full exhaust filter delete, programmer, clutch, turbo, manifold, injectors, etc. to it and now only drive it in the evenings and weekends for side work but even if it was still stock I know it would still be a beast. I have friends with the duramaxes, friends with the powerstrokes, hell i had a powerstroke before the cummins, ive driven them all and i made my decision based on what i liked, what i was comfy with, and what suited my needs the best. The new 4th generation dodges have more bells and whistles than my 3rd gen does and the chevys have more than any of them. Dont get me wrong either chevy makes a hell of a truck and they are nice as hell. My new company truck is the 15 model gmc lt or slt z71 1/2 ton and its a damn nice truck but when i have to hook to my gooseneck to haul equipment it sits and the cummins rolls out. Do like some of the others suggested, go drive them both, see what you like and dont like and base your decision on what truck will be the best for what you do. I dont hate on engines or brands, like these mud motors, its all in what you do and what suits you best. Here is a shot of mine..

ive had 3 or 4 chevy dmax and havent had any problems other than a glow plug going out here or there but was always covered under warranty. Being in the rust belt every dodge ive seen gets rust in the first few years and goes to hell quick. I have spots of chipped paint on my truck that have been exposed for a couple winters that arent even rusting. The cummins is a great engine but the dodge body is garbage.

From what I hear with from a guy at work who loves his cummins is that the dodges are no where near as smooth and as nice of a ride especially the 1 tons

Just a heads up. If you're a member of a Credit union you'll get supplier pricing on a new one which is about 5k off. Then I qualified for and other 5k in rebates. I only tell you this because I'm going through the same thing you are. Possibly just a week or two ahead of you. This month has 2k more in rebates than last month. I'd think once the 2016s come out, they will get even better. I've been digging hard for discounts, just thought I'd pass along the info

Wade I left my home a couple hours ago and looked at both Chevrolet and Dodge trucks again. A Chevy I looked at a couple days ago was 60,000 and is now marked at 49000 with rebates.

I am a ford guy now. After Obama bailed out chevy and dodge with our tax dollars and telling them no debt. Chevy said they paided it back, but if I loan u $20 and tell you "you don't owe me anything" that doesn't count as paying it back. Obama tried to force Ford to take the bailout and they refused. I am not going to spend my money on a company that got bailed out with our tax dollars and claim they paid it back. If you buy the dodge you get the douchebag mirrors that everybody thinks looks cool flipped out.

Love my 2012 f250 haven't had any problems, it's your money but I would look at the Ford if I were you.

I bought a brand new F250 Power Stroke in 1997. I drove it for 14 years with out any trouble. In 2011 Ford had the new diesel with all the trouble. I went to Canada in the fall of 2010 and we drove my pards Dmax. I was sold on it. When we returned a couple months later I had my first Dmax. I like them all but I have to coos one.

The dodges are straight up dogs on the low end....won't hardly pull a greasy string out of a monkeys ass. My partner had one (2014) for about a month before taking it back to the dealer. I could have kept it if I would have liked it, and it was a really sharp looking truck. I drove it a few times because he hated it and wanted to know what I thought. I opted to keep my 2011 with 100k miles after a couple of days. The transmissions are still real rough on the shift, and they lug around in higher gears instead of grabbing a lower gear and rolling out. They don't stop good with a load either. Sorry dodge boys.....that's my unbiased and honest opinion. It was a super nice truck with all the bells and whistles. But it was a real turd compared to the Chevys and fords we run

I bought this one today. After looking at the prices of used stuff, I couldnt justify not buying a new one. I'm also not fond of the bail out crap that GM went through. They should have went bankrupt to renegotiate the union contracts.

I bought this one locally but Jim falk Chevrolet in Clinton Missouri had the best prices that I found. I don't know where you're located but they'll ship cheap. The people I dealt with threw in my choice of tires and a spray in Bedliner to keep me with them once I compared prices.

front ends on the dodges do not stand up, the Cummings is a great engine, but they have ramped up the hp so much it has taken away from the simple dependability of the first ones. guess I would still fish with you in a dodge, but I would cringe a little every time I got in. how was the pulled wild hog?

I had a GMC 3500 dmax 2014 and it had issues. Rear end blew out at 20k, transfer case at 35k, A/C never worked right, other than those things it ran good. I sold it and got a 2015 Dodge 3500 6.7 and it pulls a 40 foot cattle trailer with no problem. The GMC could hardly keep it at 55 mph. I also have a 2011 Ford F350 Powerstroke. The only issue it has is the EGR valve gets blocked up and goes into limp home mode and pours out black smoke. The Ford dealer tells me it's because the government has put so many regs through the EPA on diesels that they run like crap. I solved the problem on the Dodge and the Ford by having that obama BS removed. No EGR, no DPF, reprogrammed and 5 inch exhaust straight back. No problems since.
