It has always fascinated me that there were cataclysmic events like this. The Missoula outburst was caused by the immediate release of water through a glacial dam that burst in Idaho which resulted in the scabland formations in Washington State. The amount of water that rushed through the area was epic, with such volume and speed that it carved out the area in just a few hours on its way to the ocean. Prehistoric humans who were lucky enough to have survived the event, must have been humbled by what they witnessed from the mountain tops which were the only places not flooded. The surface undulations left by the super rapid current were tell tail signs of the event. Similar undulations appear to the east of the Teche ridge along I-49 between Lafayette and Opelousas suggesting epic outburst flooding on the prehistoric Mississippi River channel. Though not as large nor caused by glacial dam bursting, they were epic, nonetheless.

The noise created by the event would have permanently deafened all humans and animals within miles.

Any geologists or hydrologists care to enlighten further.

I hope that I live long enough to see the changes which occur when the Mississippi river shows humans that it will not be denied its chosen course to the Gulf. The Old River Control Structure will not survive the persistence of nature.

There were no "epic outbursts" along the Teche ridge. But, the Mississippi did flow there.

If the river eventually meanders against a man-made barrier, it'll erode it. Probably not faster than it can be repaired, but a big flood tends to expedite things pretty dramatically.

That's correct although, we are talking a million years ago before man-made structures. The confusion here is that cataclysmic activity is geologic, where as, alluvial activity is hydrologic. Elementary mistake.

One sees the same undulations, current ripples with crevasses of natural or man made levees. Those I see along theTeche Ridge were probably created by ancient crevasses. I'm pretty sure one would find some at the levee break in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. I think the ancient ones I see were created by water flows much larger than anything we've seen historically. Those epic flow rates were the result of glacial outbursts in the Mississippi river's upper basin when the glaciers began receding. I think the glacial lake from which the water drained is called Agassi Lake.

Sorry D, I had a brain fart for a moment. I was thinking you were referring to seismic activity. I was comparing that to the alluvial deposition along the Coteau Ridge.

The topography of Montana, Eastern Washington and Idaho as a result of glacial Lake Missoula letting loose is pretty breathtaking. My daughter went to school in Montana and lives and works there (as a mining geologist). When I get her talking about this it is pretty interesting.
