Post Skeg adjustment on 37 GTR
I just purchased a new 37 GTR tiller on a Southfork 17×52 mud boat. At high speeds the motor wants to pull out of my hand (boat turning left) I have done a great deal of research and what I came up with for solutions are, shift the weight in the boat, and move the motor off center 1". I have tried both of which and have the same performance. The skeg on the my motor on the left side (looking from the prop foward) is slightly cupped and slightly thicker. I have read if you have this issue then you can bend the skeg to compensate for it but mine looks like it is a solid cast skeg, doesn't look like anything you want to bend. My question is: is this normal for a gatortail? And is there anything further I can do to make the boat more enjoyable to drive.
Thanks.

You are correct. The skeg is cast, don't try to bend it. My motor pushes towards me some, doesn't pull away. If your boat is trying to turn left it should be pushing against you? You can try moving the motor over more than an inch but the fact of the matter is there is going to be torque. Or so I have experienced.

Guy at gatortail told me that running the 3 blade prop, when trimmed up, the prop is biting and try to run away from you. this is the reason for the tiller torque.

Yes the tiller handle is pushing toward me, pretty hard at full throttle trimmed out. Not to the point of dangerous, unless you let go of the handle, but is defiantly uncomfortable when running for a long period of time.

Seems like everyone has this issue with the motor, I had to move mine 1 1/8 to port side. Also check to see if the motor Is at the right height might need to move it to the top pin

Trimmed down = less motor torque and a little less speed but easier to drive. I have thought of a 2 blade prop but how would it affect performance?

The two blade prop will vibrate more. Still sounds like you're trimmed too high.

Take a pic or vid of how your trim is when running wide open and post it up.

Run WOT with it trimmed mid way. While running trim it up slowly till it really starts to push on you. Then trim it down till you feel the difference and that's where you want to be.

Even better if you have a gps. trim up till you lose speed, then trim down till you gain. That's your optimum trim level. You might get a little torque but it shouldn't be terrible.

My boat drives better if i'm loaded a little heaver on the starboard side.

I am in the process of rigging the boat out with lights and other necessary stuff, it probably will not be in the water far 10-14 days but I will let everyone know how it does. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

You can also put a bead of some type of hardening puddy on the skeg where it curves to increase the efficency of whats already there. Then shape with a file and sand paper.

I may have to try that out if the raising of my motor to the top pin doesn't work.

I fixed my torque with a Seastar hydro steering and a console! Motor still torques but I don't notice near as much!
