 South Louisiana salvinia weevil
Does anyone know where I can get harvested infested salvinia weevil? Someone told me the facility in Houma is no longer harvesting them.

You could try contacting the GCLA up at lake caddo. They have a facility there and are breeding them. I believe they have done some work with some of the schools in louisiana and tx (pretty sure LSU is one of them). They may not be able to physically get any to you, but he may be able to help you locate a source closer to home. It takes lots of them, and lots of time, but they definitely help control it.

The weeviles won't work unless you have the GIANT Sylvania. There are more than one strain of it, and the the current weevels only eat the giant and not the regular. We brought some of ours to houma last year and were told that they wouldn't eat it. I don't remember the exact one we had but it wasn't the giant.

I was reading where they have a weevil that will eat hyacinth now too. I would love for wildlife and fisheries to see how those fare.

I sure hope they did enough research and know what these things will do to the the ecosystem long term.

 Re: South Louisiana salvinia weevil
From what I remember, because I haven't looked at the details in a long time, the Devils that eat giant salvania and water hyacinth are indigenous to South America and feed only on their respective plants. The problem is they can't survive our winters and die off.

 Re: South Louisiana salvinia weevil
Water hyacinth isn't native so let them eat them all. Need something for the cut grass too that's taking over

 Re: South Louisiana salvinia weevil
The ones they release up here don't eat the hyacinth, lillies, or alligator grass, and supposedly when the salvania is gone they crawl on shore and get eaten by fire ants.
