Post 37 SWOMP
Hey guys, gonna order a 37 the end of next week. My questions are break in period and what type oil and grease to use. The motor will go on a 20x60 alumaweld for now. I know its a big boat but i will only have 1 trip to the blind. Thanks

A good marine grease, as for oil just depends on your preference. Some guys go high dollar some run normal

Very little grease. I have 25 hours on mine and it was still full . The instructions will tell you everything.

I wouldn't even THINK about adding grease until 50 hours. Seriously. The bearings are sealed so the grease in the driveshaft housing only acts as a suspension agent to prevent driveshaft slap.

True story: before I got my first SWOMP 3 and a half years ago, all I had ran were Go-Devils that I had to grease every time I took the boat out. When I got my first SWOMP, Jake told me not to worry about greasing it for a while. I thought okay great. After my first weekend I put 10 hours on it and thought, surely it needs grease. I pumped like 5 or 6 shots of grease in it. Next time I ran the motor I noticed grease oozing from the top bearing assembly. Sure enough I had blown the seals on the top end by adding too much grease! Called Jake and ordered a new seal, replaced it and never touched it again. Huck Finn now has that motor. My new 35 SWOMP has a little over 50 hours and I MIGHT add a shot or two or grease before duck season starts the end of November.

Good to know, Frank! I've had the same experience with GoDevils and my MB, though the latter leaks a lot less. I took it for a drive this morning, and I can tell with the vibration I had that I need grease. When Stu let me drive his Swomp 35 last month I noticed almost no vibration and real smooth power engagement from idle to full throttle. I am sold on the motor! I will suggest, as I have before, that full synthetic oil and grease after break in (e.g. Mobil 1), or from the start, is a better choice than regular oil/grease. We don't get cold weather much down here, but for normal to hot temps the synthetic stuff 10w-30 holds up longer and reduces friction better. Although the BackH20 uses much less. what type oil/grease do they suggest you use? Is there a difference in the 35 versus the 37 EFI? I would think not.

I run 15-40 Rotella in my 37. Lots of zinc and takes heat very well.

Valvoline vr1 10w30. It's got the highest zinc rating of any oil under $7/qt. They make it in all weights my motor manual just recommends 10w30

It's simple. get a mud motor. shoot ducks in the face.
