Anti trespassing devices in the marsh
Looking for opinions on the most feasible way to stop these outlaws from coming onto my lease. I have two areas that need to be partially "blocked off" in a covert manner. I was thinking of cutting some 4" heavy wall pipe and submerging it vertically deep in the mud just below the surface of the water, spacing the pipes about 1-2ft apart. Or maybe running several pieces of large chain in a few rows to snag the prop of these unsuspecting scoundrels.
I'm thinking chains & pipes might be too time consuming and too big of a strain on my scant resources. Ideally I'd like to have something in place to stop a mud motor at full throttle dead in its track. Average water depth is 1ft or less.
Any suggestions or input would be appreciated.

I understand that this course of action may not be entirely within the letter of the law. I'm willing to concede that. The input I'm soliciting is more focused on how to "harm" the boat rather than the person.

Re: Anti trespassing devices in the marsh
Why not just string a fence up? Put whatever you want under the fence line, just make sure it's a visible barrier.
Also, in case you're still debating, rebar will really put a fuckering on a hull.

Re: Anti trespassing devices in the marsh
A fence would work for the 30ft section but I don't think it would be cost effective for the other portion. They would use the broken marsh to access the lease... I have "POSTED- No Trespassing" signs on the boundary of my property... Once someone makes the decision to ignore those signs I want them to pay the price! I really like the rebar idea. I could make a little mini mine field at the entrances. Good idea.

Re: Anti trespassing devices in the marsh
Great idea until your charged with a felony, then there's no point in having a lease because yo ass can't own a gun.. Ever thought about trail-cams on poles? Buy the ones that send pics directly to your computer/smartphone and catch em. That way if they take the cameras you can get them on felony larceny. That is assuming the $500 dollar felony threshold for theft like Mississippi.

Re: Anti trespassing devices in the marsh
I have thought about cameras and will be running that idea by the other members of the hunting club next time we get together but the cameras don't have that instant enforcement aspect that the rebar does.
On the felony subject-- if you were trespassing on someone's property.... Rode past a couple of large "POSTED" signs....kept going.... then... BOOM.. You hit the rebar-mine-field. Are you really about to call the authorities to report it ?
I'm going with no on that. I'd be willing to bet that you are so shocked at the sights and sounds of the situation that you don't even realize what's happening.
These A-holes literally won't know what hit em!

Set up a net to tangle in their prop. Then have a camera set up so you get plenty of pictures of them as they cut the net off their prop.

Re: Anti trespassing devices in the marsh
Stretch some kind of well marked cable or line and posted it "keep out" . Then if a bunch of road mesh and chicken wire that was all balled up was in the water on the your side of the cable ( for what ever reason! Fish trap , beaver) and they got it all rapped around their prop the game cameras would catch them distorting your road mesh beaver scrubber! And dat ain't right!

Re: Anti trespassing devices in the marsh
Let me tell you about people trespassing. I have some land that is posted. I had a crawfisherman cross the boundary when the water came up. This dumb ass ran his boat into a pipeline sign post and was thrown in the bottom of his boat. Now he's hurt. Then he sues the land owner for hitting the post. The pipeline company abandon the pipeline years ago. Got to hire lawyers to protect our best interest. Long story short we ended up having to pay this guy a lump sum of money to end the law suit. It lasted 5 years. Only way to stop it is know your parish laws. Photographs and sheriff dept. good luck!!

You may ask a lawyer but I believe if someone is hurt on your place due to an intentionally set booby trap even though its posted you are liable. Build a visible barrier.

Re: Anti trespassing devices in the marsh
Just sit in your blind and shoot them in the face when you see em on your lease. Take em out a little deeper. Give em cement boots and feed them to the critter. BUT only if the trespassing is super serious  It's simple. get a mud motor. shoot ducks in the face.

Re: Anti trespassing devices in the marsh
Just put up a sign that says danger underwater obstruction ahead no trespassing and no outlet and have it clearly posted several times before you get to the pipes. If they are on your property and they ignore your warning signs that clearly say pipes ahead then it will not hold up in court. More than likely they'll think it's just a bluff and still try to drive across it. If they try anything you put those warning signs up so you would not hurt yourself or your kids wouldn't if they went to you lease. Then it is not your problem if the dumbasses ignore your warnings that were there to intentionally keep YOU from harming yourself.

Re: Anti trespassing devices in the marsh
Up here, if the river comes up you can hunt anywhere. But..... You can't hit a stump, tree, or let your decoy weights touch the bottom.
I got a summons on private land almost 10 years ago and have never been anywhere but WMA and NWR since.

That's another reason I will never live in Florida. I spend good money for the land I lease for hunting and I damn sure don't want any free loaders try to hunt my property for free!

We all hate trespassers with a passion. Unfortunately, only the passive approach will save you undue hardship. Another vote for fence and cameras.

Re: Anti trespassing devices in the marsh
If a man was the sort of person that would run past a bunch of posted signs and sneak around on some ones else's place he might also be the sort of man that would seek some serious retribution if some body laid out a booby trap that jacked up his boat.....

Re: Anti trespassing devices in the marsh
what happens if you put an obstruction that kills someone else in the boat that is innocent, like a kid with their dad, not their fault they are in the boat, trespassing. It is good to be in the right, but do you really want this hanging over your head if someone was to get killed? Find another non dangerous way.

Re: Anti trespassing devices in the marsh
Would agree with doing whatever you can to stop the problem within the law. I'm from Alabama and I'm currently in louisiana for work and I'm not a big fan of the whole I own this canal and this bayou bc I lease this property but thats the law here and should be obayed. Where I'm from if you can get to it with a boat you can hunt it...not really sure how everyone views this but it is what it is. I understand how this situation can be stressful but hurting someone isn't worth it. As stated before if you have your gun or hunting rights taken away then you will not need your lease anymore. Another thing that hasn't been mentioned is something I've heard about called hunter harassment. From what I understand this can carry some pretty beefy fines in some of the weirdest situations. Hope it turns out in your favor.

Re: Anti trespassing devices in the marsh
Thanks for the input guys. I see the faulty logic in placing any underwater obstruction with intent to temporarily disable a boat and decided not to go that route. After some discussion with my hunting group we're going with a couple (cheap) cameras, additional signage and a visible barrier on one of the entrances. There was some discussion of installing the cameras that will email the photos instanly upon being taken. These seem to be too expensive to risk getting stolen.
Headed out there next weekend to re-build the blind that the trespassers burnt to a crisp, with above materials & equipment in tow.

Re: Anti trespassing devices in the marsh
If they can navigate it they can hunt it. In Wisconsin the people come before the owner. Everyone owns the water. I see no trespassing signs in a few marshes here and idk what the point is. If they can get to it its legal as long as you don't have to cross anyland. So unless you put land where the water is good luck cause not even the law can keep them out

That would never work down in La because every place is navigable by water. It's good that it's like that it's just annoying having to cross "other peoples water" to get to your own.

Exactly the point go get'er - All of the hunters ( and fisherman) in the area know that there are no public places in this marsh. Everybody knows to stay in their lane. It would be one thing if these chuckle heads were ONLY hunting on our lease. The problem is that they are destroying our blinds!
We put in money & time on upkeep every season and its infuriating when our hard work goes up in flames.
