Post How many miles, is too many miles?
Fellas, im looking to buy myself a good 4wd truck to take onto my lease, and kill some pigs. Also, to take to work and leave it parked for 2 weeks at a time.
Really want something midsize.
I have found a few Old Toyotas and old nissans that I like a lot, but some have 200k+ miles. Hell, I saw one with 300k on it and they still wanted 8k for it.

How good are the foreign engines and trucks?

Whats yall opinion on it? Are there certain things I should look for when checking out the trucks?
I know what to look for in general, but are there any trucks to stay away from? Things to look for under the hood or frame that can be signs of a rough life?

Obviously, its all about how you take care of something. just like the mudmotors. 1000 hrs on a mudmotor that was used to crawfish, and 1000 hours on a motor that was beat to death, is a huge difference.

All opinions are helpful.
Thanks!

In 2005 I bought a new Nissan Titan, to date it is the only 4x4 truck that hasn’t tried to perform a cash-ectomy (removal of all cash from the patient) on me. You know the big ticket items, transmissions, engines, drive line – is it any better than the rest? Probably not just got lucky.

Pull the dipsticks and check the engine oil, power steering, brake fluid and transmission fluids smells and looks like shit you know the differentials, transfer case are going to be the same.

Just pick one and spin the wheel raggedy man, used vehicles are like women, mileage is at the discretion of the purchaser

Check the frame for rust. Or painted over rust. Some yakkity fucks will paint over gobs of rust to hide it. Chances are if the fender wells are rust it's had a hard life. I know the Toyota t100's of the late 90s are gold. Their maual transmission are stout am the engines run forever if you take care of em, a buddy of mine has one with 300k on it, smokes like a bastard, got the truck for 400 bucks and all he does is add oil to it but it still runs like a champ . I really like the Toyota tundras with the 5.7 iforce. Those transmissions are pretty solid and so is the motor. They pull better than 3/4 ton gassers.

It's simple. get a mud motor. shoot ducks in the face.

Toyota's are good for 250-300k average, Much more if maintained right. They do hold value so find the one you like and pay the coin. Too good of a price typically there is a problem. Id look for a newere taco say 96+ with a 3.4Lv6. I have an 89 with a 3.0 V6 and it is a turd and burns a lot of gas for the low power output.

I've driven Tacoma's for a while now and won't buy anything else. It does what I need and they are problem free.

I don't mind spending the money, only if its something that will last me.
I know what to look for in general for a truck.

Heres a few 4x4's that ive been looking at.

I really would rather a Toyota or a Nissan, but I guess a jeep isn't out the question.

Wouldn't do a jeep as a daily driver. I have one (weekend vehicle) but it sucks on road trips and stuff made by Chrysler is junk anyway. We just had a 2500 ram gas burner sling a rod at 100k and the dealer nor dodge will do shit to help.

They want a pretty penny for the old yotas.

Watch out for the 22re. They are decent motors but the timing belt is known to jump every now and again. Had mine jump 3 times I think. And the last time the motor was just slap wore out. Had 180k miles on it. But I was in high school so that might have a little to do with it!

Got it rebuilt and she's running strong again! It's a 92 model btw.

I have a 2006 Toyota V8 4WD I bought brand new. It currently has 360,000 on it. Here's the good part, it's never been to the shop except for oil changes and every 100,000 I get a timing belt and a water pump. It was made in Japan.
Why don't I buy a new one?
I don't need a new one. 400,000 I give it to a child.
Can't beat a Toyota.

for the 22re motors look into l engineering.com, they have steel timing chain guides that do wonders over the stock plastic ones.

Not one on the Yota bandwagon, but have seen a few 22R motors in the 300,000 mile range with the bodies falling off over the years. I had a 94 Chevy W/T 4.3 liter that had 364,000 miles on it when I sold to a friend and it now has over 400,000 on it. My 03 F150 was closing in on 300,000 miles when I sold it so as to buy a 99 Suburban with 62,000 miles.

Rust on the frames and body is the norm up here in salt country, rusted out frames not so much.

I haven't heard anything about the 3.0 but a buddy of mine had a 3.4 and it was a beast.

I drive a 2006 Tundra Quadcab 4x4. Bought new and now has 180,000 miles on it. This was the last year they built the smaller Tundra body style. I've towed 20ft bass rigs all over the SE US, a 29 foot camper from SELA to east Tenn. More than ample power, and decent fuel usage when not hauling a load. Only problem I've had so far was to recently have the secondary air pump replaced and a front ball joint. I get offers from dealerships all the time wanting me to trade it. I know alot of those are just trying to sell a new vehicle, but I also know the older Yota's are in high demand. This being an economy based on supply and demand, the higher the demand vs the limited supply, dictates a higher price point. Most Yota truck owners don't trade very often.

If it doesn't have to be a truck, check out 3rd gen 4runners. They go for about half the price of a tacoma.

Avoid the 3.0. Stick with a 22RE or 3.4. Ensure the timing belt has been changed if you find a 3.4

Check out Yotatech, IH8MUD, Pirate4x4, etc and I bet you will find better pricing. Craigslist type websites seem to have things listed for a premium regardless of condition.

Toyota's are going to be the best mid size truck you can get IF you buy one that's been properly maintained. Tons of aftermarket support if you decide to upgrade anything on the drivetrain, bumpers, etc and typically fairly cheap to repair.

I have a 2003 4wd Tacoma with the 2.7 4cyl I use for my hunting truck. 220k and no issues and can catch some abuse at times. Wouldn't be scared to drive it anywhere. Previously had a 96 4wd yota with the same motor. 360k on it when I wrecked it. I put it through hell, other than replacing some front end parts(tie rods, ball joints, etc.) never had any problems.

Well, pulled the trigger on this one today! Got it for extremely cheap with 133k miles.
I gotta pull off all the camo stickers, but I like it.

Lol, there's a couple things I need to do to the truck to fine tune it, but nothing I don't think I can't handle!
