 Best hearing protection?
My hearing is bad and I want to find something to keep it from getting any worse. I have been shooting for many years without protection, and loud noises at work, and loud radios when younger. Now I am paying for it. I want something that I will still be able to hear until I shoot if that's possible. I see the electronic ear muffs and was wondering how well they worked, and how you can hear while wearing them? Can you tell which way the sounds are coming from? Does anyone have any experience with them and some recommendations?

 Re: Best hearing protection?
I have some that I use when shooting pistols. For duck hunting in close quarters (pit blind, boat, etc), I use .
Both work well enough, but the ESP's are custom fit, so it's easy to forget you have them in.

Definitely need to protect those ears man. Don't wanna end up like me wearing hearing aids in each ear, and I'm only 25

The muffs randy suggested work well. Use them shooting off and on. The surefire plugs are good too, I have the ep4. Just don't wash them in your pockets. It'll make you mad to ruin a 15 dollar pair of ear plugs

 Re: Best hearing protection?
I have looked at the Howard Leight muffs in the magazines. Are they waterproof? Those ESP ones are high, but I bet they work good. Whatever I get has to be waterproof.

We've used them in the rain, but I don't think they're exactly waterproof. Don't remember if it's written on them anywhere

 Re: Best hearing protection?
I got the hearing aid, in ear style, a few years ago from my ENT. Not cheap but I'll never go back.

I use Skull Screws when I go in the plants and when I shoot trap and skeet. Best ones I've used so far.

 Re: Best hearing protection?
Does anyone use the electronic ones? I was looking at the wild ear ones. They're expensive but they are hearing amplifiers but also have an adjustable shutoff for what ever DB you set it at. I need to wear ear muffs because I am losing my hearing from NIHL but I hate not being able to hear.

 Re: Best hearing protection?
In the past I have tried walker game ears(too bulky), regular plugs(drove me nuts not being able to hear), and surfire ear plugs ( http://www.surefire.com/ep7-sonic-defenders-ultra.html ) which work great for the range but block too much noise for hunting IMO. After ringing my ears pretty bad a few hunts ago I picked up a pair of these. http://www.ghoststryke.com/I've used them a couple times and are happy with them. they are comfortable but will take me a couple more hunts to fully adjust to the sound difference. I feel as though I still loose a little hearing when wearing them but not to bad. I'd say half of the loss is there is a small amount of background noise you can hear while wearing them and I already have ringing in my ears so just wearing them increases the volume of the ringing. The biggest concern I have with these is they are not water proof but I wore them under a beanie/ hood for 3 hours in driving rain and had no issue. The price may be a little steep but if it protects the hearing I still have it will be worth it.

 Re: Best hearing protection?
I have a set of the noise canceling ear muffs. There is an on/off knob that also acts as a volume knob. The more you turn the knob up, the louder exterior noises are. The you can hear someone talking next to you like normal but when a loud sound like a shotgun blast goes off, it cancels out the sound like you are wearing ear plugs. The only downside to wearing them is that it throws off the sound when im calling. I can't hear it right and it's aggravating.

 Re: Best hearing protection?
I've had multiple ear surgeries and have had two tumors removed that went from my ear to my collarbone using my corrotid artery as a highway. I can't ever remember my ears not ringing. Have had shitty hearing my whole life. I don't wear ears when I hunt but I wear em when I target shoot. The "hearable" ear plugs are super cool, but I can't use em cuz I can't hear the outside noise after about 30 seconds cuz my ears ring so bad. You guys should definitely save your ears while you can. I'm used to being deaf, no need to join me in lip reading
It's simple. get a mud motor. shoot ducks in the face.

 Re: Best hearing protection?
I'm hearing impaired as well. Thankfully my hearing aids dampen sounds above 85 DB to a safe hearing level. I have ben hearing impaired my whole life so I protect the little hearing I have.

 Re: Best hearing protection?
I went with the Howard Leight Impact Sport muffs. Thanks for all the suggestions. I would love to have some of the in ear ones that were suggested but I will have to wait a while before I try those.
