 Building a 20HP Vanguard
Been browsing the forums for a while, figured it was time to register. I am running a Go-Devil long tail on my 14ft hunting/fishing rig. I bought it from a friend with 2 engines, a 16hp and a 20hp. I did a little work on the 16, and it is currently running like a top and pushing the boat fine. I'm getting 19.5 mph with a light fishing load and nothing else. I desire a bit more so I tore the 20hp down. It had been neglected....badly. Carb was pulled off and water collected in the intake and filled the cylinder heads. Today I clean all the rust out, the oil is still black so none got below the rings, and it has good compression. So I did a port and polish while I had the heads off, and ordered my gasket kit for the rebuild. The carb is missing some pieces, leading me to my predicament. I can rebuild this one with factory parts or I can order something bigger and better. I'm going to have a de-baffled exhaust on it as well. I can't seem to find which carbs are compatible with a 20hp Vanguard. It apparently is not a common engine in the mud motor world, and I'm pretty sure it came out of an Argo. So can anyone point me to a carb that has personally worked for them? The internet leads me to some questionable and unclear stuff. Also would a cam be worth the $250? I'm trying to make this thing haul ass when the rebuild is complete. Any other little bits and pieces I should also consider in addition to the port/polish, exhaust, and carb?

 Re: Building a 20HP Vanguard
Alright, taking a new route. Found that the heads are interchangeable, so I'm going to install my ported/polished heads on my 16hp. Also learned that you can install the 20hp cam on the 16, but you will need shorter push robs because of the stroke length difference. Thinking I'm going to do this. Wondering if the cam swap will benefit me any, and what carb I should run on the 16?
