Post Why doesn't the PD splined clutch adapter sit lower?
Replacing my adapter as soon as it arrives, wondering why the splined clutch adapter doesn't seem to sit deeper on the splined drive shaft of the lower unit?

I'm basing this on the fact that some of the spline tips in my old adapter have broken off, and I'm measuring to the deepest breakage in the adapter. Looks like about 7/8" from the tip of the adapter to the deepest break, and if just the two parts are mated (not as mated when the engine is assembled) the splined shaft fits into the adapter about 1 7/8".

Since I think this interface is where my motor failed (at least I hope replacing the adapter will fix it) I'm curious why more available area at this joint isn't used? Is something wrong with the way my motor is set up? I'd like to maximize this connection but don't want to screw something up by making bad changes.

Anyone else had this issue?

They're all like that and many are a bitch to get apart as it is, if it were the full length, some would never come apart, all you need for strength is over lap of what the diameter of the shaft is.

I believe it is because the use the same parts on a short vs tall transom

The spline adapter is definitely different lengths on a short vs tall.

That's general rule of thumb, the PD does not and will not have enough power to ring that shaft in half. It's built tougher than most bush hog gear boxes.

Quick update, this new adapter has me back on the air. Still not quite sure why this failed part caused my motor to seize and stall, seems like it would have just spun, but I'm cautiously taking it on faith right now cause it's working.

Might experiment this off season with shortening the spacers between motor and lower unit by a fraction of an inch to get better engagement.
