 Re: Debris screen???
Do I need to remove the bosses, leave them, or do I need to bolt the triangle back on?

 Re: Debris screen???
Cut them so there's still enough for a wrench like a standard bolt, but don't put the triangle back on.

 Re: Debris screen???
Man I'd put it back on but that's just me. I'd hate for a piece of loose clothing to get caught in there and have an accident. Just my 2

 Re: Debris screen???
If you dont have a squirrel cage over the fan, get one, then you can zip tie the original grass guard over the front of it. If you're running alot of cattail or rozo, it will help keep debri from getting sucked into the motor vents. The gaps in the wire cage are big enough to let small pieces of trash get thru, and you definitely should not leave it uncovered, for safety principles. A squirrel cage won't set you back much, but if you get your hand in there by accident....

 Re: Debris screen???
Boat dr actually sells a kit to remove it. Mine broke and tore up all kinds of stuff a couple years. A standard bolt won't work, it has to fill that slot where those bosses go.

 Re: Debris screen???
I'll probably just put it back on. I just ask because a buddy of mine had his break and shear off a bunch of plastic fins. I'll just blue locktite so the bolt can't loosen.

 Re: Debris screen???
The grass screen can and frequently does come loose when spinning these things over the designed 3600 rpms, even on stock engines turning under 4k. If it comes loose at 4200, bounces off the squirrel cage, and a piece breaks off and lodges in your arm, head, neck, etc, then you'll wish you went ahead and removed it. It's not difficult, and not something worth even being stubborn about. You need something guarding the fan, but that grass screen shouldn't be it, as it rotates too. It's not on a lawnmower. Do as cm said and zip tie it to the squirrel cage if you're worried about trash getting into the fan through the brush guard.

 Re: Debris screen???
Our first experience only involved a bump on the head, but without hat and hood from the rain jacket, it would've left blood behind.

 Re: Debris screen???
Take it off and eliminate the problems it can cause. You can order new bolts the correct length or cut the old ones off.

 Re: Debris screen???
The new marine motors don't come with a grass screen......not needed in this application. As many problems as they cause, it would be unwise to put it back in.

 Re: Debris screen???
You don't have to cut them, just leaving something sticking up to catch on something... The ring needs to be in place and secured though one way or another, so you either need to order the new style shouldered bolts, cut those down, or use them as is..

 Re: Debris screen???
Gotcha.... put the triangle back on and just cut the bolts down. Reinstall with blue locktite and zip tie the screen on the outside of the cage.

I'd leave it out of you have to busted down already. This is what happens to my motor when the grass screen came loose at about 4200 RPM the first week of teal season.

No way you can stick your fingers through the fan guard. That's just dumb.

Don't leave the triangle. Get rid of it with the screen. Leave the ring that's against the fan.

Just cut down the studs that are there now and do away with the grass screen. Here is a good thread to look at.

 Re: Debris screen???
Not sure why u guys always wanna leave the triangle. It's not needed lol. You also don't need the debri screen. Get your fingers caught? Lol. Maybe if you have baby midget fingers, and if that's the case your wife is lying about how she likes your digits

 Re: Debris screen???
There is a big heavy fan guard, and a little flimsy grass screen. The grass screen is not needed (it doesn't even come on the new motors for marine applications)and you cannot stick your fingers through the fan guard. Not sure what you're struggling with here. Nobody has said you should remove the fan guard, just the little piece of shit grass screen that has a tendency to bust loose and destroy the flywheel fan, among other things.

 Re: Debris screen???
the hell with cutting, go to the local hardware store and buy some small bolts to replace them. Shit its only about $4-$5. There metric. Done it with the briggs as well as my Kawi. I removed approx. 1 lb off the Kawi rotating mass when I removed that and the screen.

 Re: Debris screen???
I was reading thru your other thread about your slower prop. I'm assuming this rebuild is to address that problem. You never gave us an update to what you found out. Can you give us one on that thread?
