 New gun
Finally decided to go and buy the long range rifle I've been wanting to get and once I got there something else really caught my eye...started to think about it and I would get way more practical use out a this. There's always coons and swamp rabbits running around out here and I can never get close enough to them to shoot em. Less than 100yds I see this being hog deadly as well... Savage model 93 in 17HMR caliber with a stainless bull barrel and toped it off with a Vortex Crossfire II 3-9x40. Haven't shot it yet but heard of this 17 being accurate at 150yards plus. If so I see this being a lot of fun. Was a pretty good buy to, savage has s heck of a deal on this gun. Walked out just under 500 for the whole set up.

 Re: New gun
Very accurate. Don't know bout that hog though. You'd have to be close. Real close.

 Re: New gun
I don't see why not, I've killed hogs with a 22 at 50 yards or so. Just gotta hit em in the ear! Lol. From what I've read the 17 has a WHOLE lot more down range energy that a 22 as well as being accurate at range. Most of the marsh hogs around here arnt any bigger than 50 lbs either. I wouldn't see it being an issue at one that size at 50-75 yards. People shoot coyotes with em all the time and I know they arnt getting them that close.

 Re: New gun
Sweet looking set-up. I have the .17 Mach II which I squirrel hunt with. It's a Savage bull barrel configuration with a VX-II in a 3x9...had the trigger worked by that guy in Houma off West Main. It will drive tacks!
Let us know how this one works for you. I've given thought to the .17 HMR. I'm on a .300 BLK kick right now, though!

 Re: New gun
Nice gun. Fun little caliber but don't like wind very much.

 Re: New gun
I like the round, but not near enough energy to down a hog on a reliable basis. I still prefer a plain ol 30-30 for pigs less than 100yds. At anything over 50yds a .17 needs surgical accuracy to make a one round kill. Hogs over 100yds get a .270 or .300WM. You're literally talking something with the same cross section as a daisy BB gun. Varmint hunting? Absolutely. Showing off and carving a squirrel out of the fork of a tree at 150yds? Hell yes. But not for hogs, not for me anyway. Mainly because id rather be shooting and loading them up than shooting and then going to find them. That being said. I've killed more than one hog with a .22LR at 40ish yds but I don't do it unless there is no other firearm available. I'd shoot buckshot at them before a .22...
Nice rifle BTW, not knocking the purchase or the choice whatsoever. Just be realistic about what you do with it and know it's limitations.

 Re: New gun
As for hogs, I just as soon shoot them and leave them where they lay....gut shoot them so they run off and die somewhere else is a better thought!

 Re: New gun
I've got a 93 bull barrel. Accurate gun. Easily shoot quarter sized groups at 100yds with minimal wind.

 Re: New gun
It is a better varmint gun then you think . I've a crack barrel single shot in.17 that is murder on coyotes . Crumple them dogs , hit em in the shoulder . Speed and a bullet that flat comes apart when it hits . Worked fine for me.

 Re: New gun
I won't preach the "eat what you kill" sermon just because they are so invasive and destructive down there. But as a general rule, if it's socially acceptable to cook and eat, (and even sometimes if it's not) i don't leave it laying. A 30-50lb wild sow is one of my favorite things to cook and eat. Prairie dogs, coyotes, nutria, etc... All fun shoots with a .17. My go-to lately has been my .22 Hornet.

Nice gun! I have the same gun in 22mag. It will shoot quarters at 100yds.

 Re: New gun
As for the hog situation, I get what y'all are saying about reliably putting it down. We'll just have to see what happens when opportunity presents itself. I have faith in the little bullet. We shot a nutria yesterday evening with my buddies with the CCI 17grain TNT round and it put a hole in that thing head probably 2" in diameter On the exit side...

 Re: New gun
Sighted it in at 50 then moved back to 125 and zeroed it in at 125. This is how it held a group at 125 yards (10 shots)
And then as I was sighting it in this poor guy poped his head up probably another 15 yards past my target. Held it dead on his head and hit him right behind the ear guesstimateing 140 yards or so. Its a lot louder than I was expecting but shoots like a dream. Little heavy off hand shooting but was driving tacks laying down shooting off the bag.
