Post Possible GTR problem
My motor only has 26 hrs on it. I posted an earlier question about the idle speed, how it gradually speeds up and I can bump the throttle and it slows back down. Well, what I got now is when I do bump the throttle, when the idle is slowing back down to about 950 rpm, the motor makes a slight knocking noise. I dont really know if its coming from the motor, or if this would be something to do wit da clutch or tranny. If I give it gas, the noise stops. If I put it in reverse or in gear, the noise stops. But sometimes at an idle it knocks. Any ideas?

Mine did the same thing you described. I took it to Gator-Tail for 100 hr service had them put shims under motor to tighten belt and a few other odds and ends that I didn't want to tackle or was unwilling to attempt in my small storage unit.

I just told Hoyt I hear a knock they put some shims and its all good now. Not sure if that was the fix to the problem or not though. Also, I switched to Premium gas and haven't heard any noise since doing that. I also gained 1mph on my top end

I just edited my post... Added Premium Fuel that I switched too. I'd call Hoyt tomorrow and ask him.

Is it comin from da engine itself or from behind da engine? If it's comin from behind da engine it could either a loose belt or loose prop. I doubt it is da belt, I would put a wrench on da prop nut. If da noise is comin from da engine itself bring it to da GT shop.

I agree wit Craig, don't worry about it. You got two years to blow dat engine up for free.

My engine does the exact same thing. It drives me crazy! Mine has 76 hours on it and has done that since I bought it with 15 hours on it. I've been tempted to run the engine with the clutch and trans. removed and see if it still does it. I've been through the loose belt or prop checks, also checked for any slack in the pistons or connecting rods. I think it would have come apart by now if it were something major wrong.

My motor made a knocking noise once... That was when I had an air leak in the fuel line. It would knock and not revv up under a load. I fixed the air leak and no more noises... Check the obvious.. Another note i wouldnt expect these Mass produced engines to be 0 tolerance, they gonna have some tolerances ya know.

The sound your hearing isn't anything with the drive belt or clutch or anything to that nature. What your hearing is more of a spark knock/valve clatter type of noise. Just another example of poor Briggs engineering. You'll be fine. Try switching to 93 octane and see what happens.

What is your engine idle set at? If it's too low turn it up a little and that should help some. My engine only did this when running below 1100 rpms....mostly around 950-1000 rpms.

Try adding actane boost in there to see if it helps. I recall other people running AVgas too, but I didnt know how the heads and valves would like the Lead. It may help or hurt I am not certain on how valves react when introduced to lead when they werent designed for em. Try that and it higher octane cuts the knuck out.. you have a Detonation problem. Thats can happen if your spark plug is too hot, Glowing carbon deposits on the exhaust valves (bad valve settings), Lean fuel mixture (like I had described earlier in my post), and an overheatin engine can also cause detonation.
