 Dog for old folks
My wife's grandad just lost his dog of 14years. His wife lives in a nursing home with Alzheimer's and that was his only real daily companion. The dog died a couple weeks back. Since then, he has been completely depressed. This man is 84yrs old and still fills his own deer feeders, checks cameras, mows shooting lanes etc. Since losing his dog, he hasn't so much as walked to the end of his driveway and gotten the paper. He's not eating right and everyone's getting worried he's gonna let himself go too far. At that age, it doesn't take much to put you in a hole. We're just trying to get him feeling good again and out and about. That's what keeps him going.
We're looking for something low maintenance, easily housebroken, and a good companion type dog that'll jump up and ride in the mule, tractor, etc.
Any suggestions?

 Re: Dog for old folks
I would suggest a poodle, my moms close friend has one because she needs it as a service dog and it does great. Doesn't shed either

 Re: Dog for old folks
He's had two Pomeranians. That's what this last one was. He's hellbent on not getting another dog but he needs it. He's had a dog his entire life.
I've got a friend with a labradoodle and aside from looking like a complete pansy, it's actually a pretty cool dog. We've never considered a poodle though. My first suggestion was a beagle. But that may be a bit high strung.

 Re: Dog for old folks
Several years ago we adopted a retired racing greyhound. Sweetest dog we have ever had. They are very laid back, sleep a lot, very calm, love people and are very gentle souls. Before being released to a home they are foster cared to get used to living in a home. Many do not even bark. I cried like baby when she died after having a stroke.

 Re: Dog for old folks
I'm just being real, make sure you have a home for the dog to go to when he can't take care of the dog. My mom lives with me, she's 83, she fell Tuesday and broke her shoulder, she probably won't be coming back to my place. I can already tell my dog misses her, he's looking for her. It's just not fair for the dog to go to a shelter when the dog can't be taken care of.

 Re: Dog for old folks
He has a daughter and a son that live within rock throwing distance, that won't be an issue. We're aware that whatever he gets will likely outlive him at this point. Just the facts. He knows it too.

 Re: Dog for old folks
How about getting an adult rat terrier? We just got a rat terrier puppy and she is great, but she is a damn handful. She needs a lot of attention and exercise right now. An adult would already be mellowed out and would get along just fine I bet.

 Re: Dog for old folks
I'd recommend a good miniature schnauzer. Not a yappy one, you'll have to check out different breeders, but my grandparents love miniature schnauzers, my mom has one and a toy schnauzer on the way. Super low maintenance, great personality, easily housebroken. We've only had females. You don't need to dress em up all fancy like some people do.

Airedales are bad to the bone. But we do like our little decker rat terrier. She should be about 30 lbs.

Thanks for the link Giga. That looks really really good. Except the part where they say you need to be very active. He goes, yes, but it's normally on his mule. He doesn't walk much distance anymore.

 Re: Dog for old folks
Never owned a German Shepherd, but the ones I have been around were very cool dogs. My buddy had one that his wife trained to wipe it's paws off before coming into the house. It took her a couple hours one day, but the dogs always wiped it's paws before going indoors. Very loyal and protective dog as well.

 Re: Dog for old folks
The dog was also very friendly but always kept himself between my buddy's wife and anyone the dog was not familiar with. It would have been a bad day for a stranger to try and get to her.

I'm old and can tell you what not to get. My daughter gave us her Jack Russel Terrier, little S.O.B is hyper and thinks shes a Doberman. Mouth overloads her ass al the time. Really enjoy seeing her getting her ass kicked, by the other dogs in neighbor hood. Pretty good retriever though.

 Re: Dog for old folks
I would suggest a rescue dog. Pound, rescue sites, etc. Some of the rescue sites are nice because the dogs have been in a home and so they can give you an idea of personality, training, etc.
I have 3 of them (including a Choc Lab).
You can get one that is a little older, already housebroken, etc...
Probably won't get a pure breed of some sort, but mutts can be great companion dogs. He can spend some time with them and see if there is connection between him and the dog before he makes a choice.
You can get a good idea of personality as opposed to a puppy.
Some will disagree, but they know you saved them and they are eternally loyal because of it.
Good luck.

 Re: Dog for old folks
FWIW, My wife has a Markie. Maltese/Yorkie Mix. Probably the best inside dog I have ever had. Full grown, and weighs 6 lbs. She's laid back, and pretty damn close to the smartest dog I've ever had. Listens well, and only took about 2-3 weeks to train her for inside. She wouldn't hurt a fly, but she will let you know if she hears something.
She sleeps in the bed every night. Will sleep 12+ hours if you sleep with her.

Go to the pound and find an older calm dog that won't drive him nuts.

 Re: Dog for old folks
We got him a mini dachshund. Picked her up from a rescue, she's 3yrs old and seems to be working out great, no puppy phase, low maintenance, and easy to take care of. I have personally had excellent luck with the breed having two at home as family pets as well as Lott of friends and family with the same. It was a no-brainer when we found her with the rescue group. Thanks guys for all your suggestions. Looks like our next dog may be one for me. I'd like a Boykin but I'm not gonna have the necessary time for a good bird dog. Who knows what I'll end up with.
Russ, feel free to post that pic buddy.

Great choice. We have 2 rescue dachshunds. Wonderful little dogs. The 2 chesapekes are sort of puzzled by them. The dachshunds couldn't care less.
