 Meranti
To think we get some bad hurricanes... The super typhoon that's about to hit Taiwan is a bad mo fo. Current sustained winds of 185mph, gusts to 225mph with 48' max wave heights right now. This thing is like a F3-F4 tornado the size of Georgia and Alabama. https://weather.com/storms/typhoon/news ... ti-sep2016

 Re: Meranti
Thats a biggen! My understanding see the pressure is different with typhoons making them less damaging then a hurricane. That thing is huge but not near the power of Andrew

 Re: Meranti
The Japanese Meteorological Agency estimated Tuesday that Meranti's pressure was 890 millibars.
That's looowwww pressure man. Andrew was 922 milibars at 175mph max for one minute.

 Re: Meranti
Typhoon is called such because it's in the Pacific. It's just a name for what it is, called different because of where it formed. No difference other than that. Categories are based off wind speeds, and pressures are theoretically measured the same, and typhoons nor hurricanes are not categorized on that.
Edit: typhoons are technically northwest pacific (ie, potentially going to hit Asia, Phillipines, etc). If they threaten the US, they're called hurricanes still.

 Re: Meranti
I remember Andrew was bad. The lower the pressure, the stronger the storm.
