hello, i have a 2005 27 prodrive. can someone tell me what lower unit oil being grey could mean ? i changed it probably 3 weeks ago and it's a silver grey color after checking it just now. thanks for any help.

If no metal shavings I wouldn't worry about it.
Milky looking oil means water is in the oil.
I would replace lower unit oil and run it a few times in the water then check again.

changing lower unit prop seal is a piece of cake.

If it was recently run, it looks like that.

On those older lower units, if it's getting water in it, it will eventually push out the top. If it's not doing that, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Again, I'll ask, had it been run recently?

I never really messed with trying to figure out the charging systems on those old motors, and completely removed them from all the ones we've had.

I'd say if it doesn't show somewhere north of 13 volts when at half throttle +, it ain't charging. Russ has done a lot more tinkering with the charging systems on these things.

That's the way I do it!

No real reason...Not much of a charging system anyway, batteries still would need to be charged, already had onboard charger, building used motors, didn't feel like testing/fucking with them, stator robs power from the motor, lazy...

The oil....next time drain it into a very clean pan. Check with a magnet to see if it has shavings. Pour the oil into a clear container and let it sit in your garage for a few days to see if any water phases out.
The battery...check the battery voltage across the posts with the engine off. Start the engine, check the voltage again across the posts. If the voltage is the same running and not running the engine is not charging. Check on the posts not the cables in case there is a bad connection, then check the cable connections. Try replacing the voltage regulator first. Relatively cheap and easy. If not, it's the rotor/stator.
