36hp PD with mod prop question
I have a 1848 PD with a 36hp. Its a 2013 model so I'm told its a GEN lll. I put on Voodoo exhaust, heads, cam and gear, and mikuni flat slide carb. PD said the stock prop was a 12x12 progressive. The stock prop only has 30 hours on with not too much wear. I have to trim down so far there is hardly a rooster tail to keep it from hitting the rev limiter and i get 28 hp out of it. Delta said i had to buy a stock prop and have it worked to add pitch up to 14 at Baggy's. Does anyone know of a prop to buy or is that my only option?

Re: 36hp PD with mod prop question
Your problem is that lower unit. The gearing in the gen 3 is too low. Adding a cam and other bells and whistles only made it that much worse. But as far as props, pd is about the best choice. I pitched mine to a 15 from baggy and I'm running a gen 2 oil filled lower.

To the op. I have a stage 2 gen3 prodrive. And yes since you have gone ahead and modded your motor you have opened up a very wide array of options as far as props go.

Re: 36hp PD with mod prop question
When I had my motor on my 18x54 boat I had 2 props. A stock 3 blade that I had baggy work to an 18 pitch "speed prop" boat would run 32-33 with a 2 man fishing load. I also had a load carrying prop which was the 2 blade shovel prop. Which also had to be pitched up by baggy. And it would run 28-30 all day long toting around an elephant. . . .
If I were you I'd take the prop you have now and bring it to baggy tell him what it's doin and what you'd like it to do and go from there.

Re: 36hp PD with mod prop question
You don't happen to have a pic of your lower unit do you because in early 2013 you could still get the gen 2 lower and in pretty sure the gen 3s came with a 13x15 or something close to that if I'm not mistaken

Re: 36hp PD with mod prop question
To teammarshafia, I have attached a pic of the foot of my motor. If it helps it is a oil filled gear box. To Banded-mallard, I can see where the gearing in the lower foot would really make a difference, buy surely there is a ptop with the right pitch that will do some good. When I was told be Delta that I needed to get a rpop from PD and have Baggy work it, they said I needed to start with the pitch of 14. teammarsh mafia you said that you went with 15. was that on the stock 3 blade you did that on?

Re: 36hp PD with mod prop question
Na my 2 blade is a 15, my 3 blade is an 18
I ran my 3 blade for a while pitched at 16 and it was a pretty good balance between speed and load carrying but the three blade sucked in the thick stuff

Re: 36hp PD with mod prop question
My gen 3 is pretty much on the limiter with an empty boat (1854 @ 3/16) with heads carb and exhaust. No cam yet. If I add a hunt load Im at about 4400. So ideally ya you would probably want a prop to run for an empty boat and one for loaded.

Re: 36hp PD with mod prop question
Thank you for your input and yes I have seen major difference with the mods and stick prop. Yes I had full intentions of changing the prop but got on here for ideas. No it wasn't a waist of money and it didn't make my propblem worse. I ordered myprop from PD and it's being shipped straight to Baggy to be worked to a 12 in with 14 pitch prop. I'll let you know how it turns out. Baggy said i will run over 30 and carry one hell of a load so in my eyes that's not making the problem worse. Thank you for your input

Re: 36hp PD with mod prop question
Not a waste of money necessarily just a little more work to get everything out of what you've added.

Oh no me saying it wasn't a waste wasn't directed at what you said bud. I knew when I did the mods I would have to change props I was just looking for a starting place.

Re: 36hp PD with mod prop question
I'll tell you exactly what I've done and how it turns out if you like. I went with what Baggy said and can't wait to try it. It's stout now but wil have the pulling power and run over 30 as well.

Re: 36hp PD with mod prop question
I have a Gen 3 LU on my 2054 PD and went stage 2 about 50hrs ago and after doing the mods it's still no crazy speed demon, but the Gen 3's weren't designed to be and never will be, but the load it carries is quite impressive. It's a 30mph boat now and loaded pretty heavy (5ppl, 25gals fuel, 2 batteries) its a 24-25mph boat in deep water with a worked 3 blade. Load carrying was what I wanted, and it's what I got after the mods....I've been very happy with the upgrades!

Re: 36hp PD with mod prop question
Southern hunter it sounds like we are looking for the same out of our boats and I'm pleased with what I'm getting. Can you tell me what pitch you ended up at?

Re: 36hp PD with mod prop question
I ordered the three blade prop from PD , and Baggy is taking it to a pitch of 14 and adding cup. If you want me to I'll msg you on how it does.

Re: 36hp PD with mod prop question
Hopkins makes a 14x14 has any body tried one of those on a modded PD Gen III?

Re: 36hp PD with mod prop question
No I would have looked into it tho to see what it would have cost. By the time I get it bought which was 300 and getting it worked for 100 I'll have over 400 unit. Do you have any idea how much they are there?
