Mb700 went boom... go figure
The owner of the company I work for has a friend with a 7000 with a cracked case. He took it to a md dealer near us (in wi, so the options are limited) told him the case is unavailable as they quit making the 7000. So now I’m trying to figure out if we should just get a stock short block or say screw it and put a complete 37 or 40 efi on it. Any reason why a stock short block wouldn’t work? Or is the money better spent on a complete engine at this point? Did some searching and didn’t come up with enough to satisfy my curiosity. Thanks!

What are you referring to as "the case"?
If you are talking about the cylinders, There is nothing different from a stock 35.
If that is the only issue, and nothing else needs to be replaced, the parts are gonna be around $1000 with gaskets.
You can replace the "short block" for around $1800 which will replace the pistons/rods, and cam with stock parts.
Give me a call if you have more questions.

I have not laid eyes on it yet. From the sounds of it he picked it up from the dealer as a basket case after they told him $11000 (no I didn’t put one too many zeros in there) to fix it. Im assuming it is one of the cylinders. “The case” is what he told me. I’m just not sure he wants it put back together with those internals. I will touch base with you once I’ve seen the parts in person.

I replaced the case on mine when it popped, used a vertical and plugged the dipstick hole. The case is no different, just depends on what internals need to be replaced, which will affect the total cost. If it's only the cracked case, then easy fix. Just takes a little time. If some internals went (a rod or piston), then that'll add some cost, but still not 11k worth of work. Buying a new engine, then the parts to build a 7000 doesnt cost 11k. Sounds like that dealer doesnt know what they're doing or you're getting incomplete information.

Re: Mb700 went boom... go figure
I talked to the owner today. He says the block is cracked down in the valley. He really doesn’t care for the mods. If we’re going to stock internals and he’s interested in efi anyways is there a whole lot involved in dropping a complete 37 or 40 efi on it? I’m assuming just adding the fuel pump if there isn’t already one? Any additional wiring or different key switch? Also probably re-gearing the drive because of the lower hp and possibly even a different prop?

Whatever he does I wouldn't use the dealer he has been talking to that told him 11 grand to fix his old motor. It sounds like they don't know what they are doing.

Re: Mb700 went boom... go figure
If he's going the efi route, I recommend the complete engine (40). Sell parts off the one he has. The heads if they're still good, carbs, case cover, any internals, etc. A new 40 will bolt right on and come with the Briggs warranty. He can change out the lower gear to get the ratio right, or swap both top and bottom gears if he prefers. Will or maxxis can get you an engine, as can probably that dealer, though I bet he'll overcharge.

I would call Backwater performance it considering getting the 40 EFI. I spoke to them last week about it and I'm pretty sure they will ship it direct to you if you want.

If you decide to part that one out, let me know. I was in your same boat and recently rebuilt a HD7000 with all new parts. Was nowhere near 11K. incredible motors though..
