Speed variations from GPS vs. Phone
I see so often here guys posting their speeds via cell phone and not hand held GPS or lowrance/humminbird I did a test with 5 variations last weekend just to see what the difference would be. Here's what I used: 2 x cell phones using 2 different GPS apps; 1 x Garmin Fenix 3 watch; 1 x Garmin etrex 30; and 1 x lowrance 5 Elite dsi. Phone 1 showed 32.2 mph Phone 2 showed 33.7 mph (I liked this app ) Watch showed 30.3 mph Both the etrex and Lowrance were exactly the same at 30.2 mph. Fun little test just to see how cell tower GPS compares to proper satellite GPS systems. I know this isnt new news for anyone, just thought I'd share my findings. Load was myself, wife, my 6yr old, and fishing gear. Tailwind and current pushing us along with the fat blade on the GTR40XD spinning 4500rpm. Support your troops. We support you. B.

I've said that for years, recorded my old prodrive running high 34 touching 35 on a Garmin. Not on a tin can neither. https://youtu.be/emIBsHyb8eU

Did the same with two different gps units one Garmin and one Megellan, against police radar wasn't 1 mph difference between all three. Did a timed measured mile both upstream and down stream on river and found a bit more difference in mph.

Re: Speed variations from GPS vs. Phone
My Garmin and Samsung S5 Active were dead on for my runs. So I could always check depending on load and whether or not I had my Garmin.

My Motion X was spot on with a Garmin handheld. I have a video of it somewhere.

Once you get south of the Mason Dixie line you pick up 3 mph also.

Re: Speed variations from GPS vs. Phone
I have a friend that swears he was riding a creek and the moment he went south of I-10, he felt his boat gain 3mph and his lower unit gain 3 inches.
