Another Freedom Outboard Topic
Anyone check these out recently or run one? They now have a "Salt Water" motor. Looks like it might be perfect for someone like myself who just runs shallow water and vegetation. Id still worry about running that lower unit into anything at speed. Also they are offering custom built boats to go with the motors. Would be nice to hear from someone who isn't involved with Freedom about there experience with the motor. Hope everyones having a good winter. Cheers!

Re: Another Freedom Outboard Topic
I’ve been out of the loop on the site for a few years now with getting my business off the ground. I am the dealer here in Lafayette for Freedom Outboards. I have been demo/testing them since September. I have to say that I have really enjoyed them. The salt water motor will suit a large majority of people that have a surface drive. The prop that comes with it is a load carrying very aggressive prop. I recently sold a 1756 Ambush with Elite transom with a 50 Hd (salt water). Alone in the boat it runs 32-33. If you put 8-900# in the boat it runs 32-33. You can put a regular prop on it and get more speed out of it. The mud motor version has a better reverse than anything other than a pro drive (obviously) and will take up and get on step better than the pro drive I had on my skiff in heavy vegetation. Base line test that I’ve run is I have a 19’ brother skiff. 37pd optimal conditions 27mph add 3 guys and gear and I was down to 18 mph. With the freedom mud motor, alone 32mph, loaded 28mph. With the freedom HD, boat starts to porpoise at 33-34 mph and loaded with 5 guys and gear, 32 mph. I haven’t been able to put them in mud with the high water and my free time all hunting season chasing rack buck deer, but will be soon. No pictures on the web are current with the finalized design of the keel cool/cav plate. The finalized design looks like a whale tale. The radiator is mounted on the back of the engine instead of in the boat. It is between me and a place in FL to do product testing on the 250 and by next year we should have everything from 25 hp - 250 hp available. The HD is $9300 for the 50 and $9100 for the 40, and the mud motor is $12,700 for the 50 and $12,500 for the 40. The mud motor version comes with their hydraulic jack/break away plate. If y’all have any questions feel free to call or come by the shop. They have had one gearcase failure and it was a motor sold to the British guard. They ran it in gear at 6200 RPM out of the water and after around 45 mins, a prop shaft seal failed. They had one powerhead failure, the guy had a leak in the cooling system and when the engine hot alarm went off, he disconnected the temp sender, and ran it till it blew up. With anything there is going to be someone out there that will break it. You can put the wrong person with a ball bearing and a rubber mallet and he’ll break it in the dirt.

Re: Another Freedom Outboard Topic
If the mud motor is 12700 for a 50, what in the world is a 250 going to cost?
For 14, the hoss 75 is running 40 mph empty and 38 with 4 people. Unless proven otherwise, I don't see the value in these freedom outboards with the stats given.
My 40 GTR runs over 35 with 2 people and a light load, and it cost me under 10

Re: Another Freedom Outboard Topic
I don’t see them offering a 250 in the MM just the HD. The hoss 75 weighs 800# the Freedom 50 mm weighs 300#. It’s new but there is a place for it especially when the 90-130 range is covered. I understand the cost issues, and have tried to get them to work on it. Why pay $12500 for a 40hp Freedom MM when I can get a 40 GTR etc for 10. That part is out of my hands. As far as speed goes I can make them faster with propping. In the larger HP ranges, if you have a dual or triple rig, this will give you the ability to put a single, quiet, reliable outboard that will get you where you want to be. I promise you that I was skeptical, but after running them, I can’t wait to put a 90 on the back of the skiff. It’s never going to be for everyone, but there are a large amount of people that don’t want a mud motor, but can’t use an outboard in some places. This bridges that gap with the HD. I could go on and on and I’m sure I eventually will but supper is ready.

Sounds like a great marketing plan when you can't even put accurate current pics up on the web.

Re: Another Freedom Outboard Topic
be cool to see some videos of this HD (i assume thats the salt water motor) running threw some thick veg and other things that an outboard cant do but having a surface drive is sort of "overkill" for. The speeds your seeing on that size of boat are not what I was expecting to hear. I know you say you can get some more top end with a worked prop but how much load carrying are you going to end up giving up? Have you been testing console or have they all been tiller handles? Seeing lots of people running close to those numbers with slightly modded surface drives. All that said id love to have something thats quieter than a surface drive. In my area pretty much anywhere you are launching a boat your going to drive past peoples houses and piss them off at 5am, so really anything helps.

Those pics are from the manufacturer. As soon as my new motors come in I’ll get some more. Im booked pretty solid on weekends till April but afterwards, ide like to get it out there and do some shallow/mud testing. Just haven’t been able to break free.

Re: Another Freedom Outboard Topic
This may have already been tried but why don’t one of the three major MM companies put one of these tohatsu engines on their frame. Would be a high rpm motor with a lot better lower. I personally think the PD with FPR and instant reverse with a hex shaft would be awesome.

I know outboards are water cooled. I was saying use the same closed loop cooling system that freedom has and slap it on a PD. I’m not sure what you would do with the exhaust.

Re: Another Freedom Outboard Topic
Radiator doesn't look to bad. BUT.......... those hose on the "whale tail" would get ripped off in less than 5 min of run time with all the shit we have to run through. That might become an issue, but I'm with you on the quiet side. Hell I can actually have a conversation now while running WFO with my Yamaha 70 compared to the Old PD.

Re: Another Freedom Outboard Topic
Ive been on the fence about having a boat built but really didn't want to have a surface drive on it as all I have is shallow and vegetation. There just really isnt that much mud where I am. Was thinking a prop tunnel might work but I guess ill be holding off a while longer until some of the larger HP Freedoms come out. Keep us up dated!

This is the outboard version. They also offer the “mudmotor” version with the extended drive.
