 spider cracks in hull
Got a guy who wrote to me about spider cracks in his hull. Wanted to know if gg would help. I told him no. He sent me pic and the hull doesn't look like it got a dent in it. He says he does not run it hard and its obvious. the bottom is 1/8 5086. Any of you see or dealt with this?

 Re: spider cracks in hull
Electrolysis can causing pitting leading to cracks, can't tell by the picture but that would be my first guess.

 Re: spider cracks in hull
That was My first thoughts but says he's got a battery switch and you can see the boat doesn't set in the water much. How would you fix it?

 Re: spider cracks in hull
My boat was 1yr old when i did my Gator glide....
When i lifted it off the trailer everywhere it sat on a bunk board it was ate up and worm holed from electrolosis.
I was explained that this is caused by the copper content in the treated bunk boards reacting with the aluminum....Even where my boards are bolted to the trailer its corroded pretty bad!!!

 Re: spider cracks in hull
Use cypress boards. So they don't rot and u won't have to worry about the chemicals.

 Re: spider cracks in hull
Yep,,,im fixing to go get some here soon. I was given an old Hay Barn built from 1x12'' cypress planks and 2x4 studs...I will be using it in my house. So will defenatly use that on the boat trailer.
I wasnt a happy camper to see that fairly new hull looking that way. Luckily it wasnt all the way though....The gator glide filled it in nicely.

 Re: spider cracks in hull
Cant see under his bunks, but the bottom where the cracks are it don't look that pitted. Did the PT buck thing cause electrolysis or was it acidic? Don't know about an on board charger yet but he did run a Honda generator with rubber mount but it would have powered lights. I would think it would take a lot of bow fishing to do that and the bottom wear doen't show that. Once he resolves the why, How would you repair this? Just drill and weld I would guess. I'm not a welder but would guess if the metal was that punky from electrolysis the welder would know right away!

 Re: spider cracks in hull
Also, when he was running the genny and lights, everything needs to go back to the genny and be isolated, dont use the hull as a ground/neutral...

 Re: spider cracks in hull
They all look like they line up , I'm sure there's a chance it's electrolysis , but it's a good possibility that each on of them crack coordinates with a weld on the opposite side with the stringers. If when it was welded there was good penetration that ended with a lil pit hole in the stop of the weld , that becomes a weak point over time . Could also cause spider cracks.

 Re: spider cracks in hull
If y'all are having that much trouble with electrolysis putting an anode on your boat will help , theres also a possibilty that if it's eating up as quick as some of you say that your aluminum may not be marine grade. I had an aluminum boat that my dad an I built 28yrs ago that when I sold it had some electrolysis but not that bad and two spiders cracks right opposite of welds on the bottom. Really don't think electrolysis is the culprit of cracks.

 Re: spider cracks in hull
Electrolysis doesn't make cracks it makes holes. Hard to tell in the photos but is it holes or cracks?
