Hey guys I've been doing some research on a new hull to hang the 36 Prodrive on. My current rig is a 1748 and it runs great until you pile 4 fat guys, every decoy that's been produced since the Gulf War, guns, and other miscellaneous gear that no human could possibly need on a half day hunt into it. At that point it will inevitably almost get on plane but will not quite break over and do it. Now before you gentleman begin pencil whipping me with tales of hydro physics just save it. I don't care about breaking any speed records. I'm only interested in finding the best rig to carry a load and step up on plane every time and run steadily. I've been looking into something 17' or 18' between 54" and 60" wide. Any wisdom would be appreciated. Thanks

The more surface area you've got on the water, the better you'll displace weight. That being said, if those are your choices, go with the 1860. 2054 would be a load hauling SOB too but it won't be passing much. I've hauled my 4 wheeler in my 1860 and with that and camping gear it stepped it and ran fine with the 37. It was slow but it had the bitch loaded DOWN.

Get a 20' 72" lol jk . I'd go with the 18' 60" should do more then ok.

Minimum 1854 with a modded motor if you are carrying that much stuff. Possibly invest in finding some smaller friends that are not hoarders!

Usually people complaining about speed and load carrying are fat asses like me...the 250 and above club,

I vote 20'. You would be surprised at what my old boat would step with a stock GTR. It would step 4 man hunting load. Might run 22 or so.

2009 1860 CC with a GTR cam and decked heads and I do well with a hunting or bowfishing load. 4 guys, generator and ice chest. Low 20's but no problem getting on step.

It's simple. get a mud motor. shoot ducks in the face.

Jake you need to get with the times. 7 marine is making a 627 now. Those 557's are old news. Time to upgrade. Haha. Saltwater fishing is my other hobby.
Thanks for the input guys. Definitely leaning toward the 1860. Would going to 20 feet not offset the expanded surface area with weight or is it still enough to make a difference?

The benefit of going to 20' far outweighs the added hull weight of 2' more boat. I've said it before. If I could change one thing about my boat, it would be to make it 20' long.

There's actually a video on the 'tube of a 37 GDSD on a 2048 GD hull. Looks like it does just fine to me.

I started out with a 1442 then built a 1748 then and 1848 then a 2048 and now I'm building a 2054. And I run tight bayous and timber and love it. Going to try a little wider hull this time just to see how it's going to do. But unless I get a small block I'm going to have 20' hulls.

I'd try modding your motor first.
You can probably do it for $700-1000 depending on who does the work.

If you like your motor being stock like I do, get a 20' boat and don't look back.

What about a 2060?

Any of you guys running 1860's running tall sides?

My 1860 is short sided but I wouldn't be scared of my motor on an identical hull only 2' longer. I think it would be just fine. I can't comment on a high sided boat but I don't see there being a whole lot of difference other than whatever additional weight from the material and the fact that you'll be higher profile for the wind to blow you around a little more.

This 1848 did an awesome job hauling a very heavy load.

I think people often overlook the luxury of driving a vehicle to the camp. We generally try to run bay boats to the camp for that reason.

How fast do you have to go and how much power can you afford. The first picture is a 24 X 48 Alweld with a cabin. It carries gear for a week for two guys plus 50 gallons of gas at 20 to 23 mph. The cabin can be a problem in strong crosswinds. The power is a single 35 SD. With the cabin off I have hauled two 600 lb snowmachines down a narrow, winding, shallow, rocky river with no problems. It was a short run though...only 45 miles.
The second picture is a 24 X 72 with twin 35 SD's. It will haul a pallet of plywood and 10 bags of readymix at 30 mph.
I favor big boats because I don't run stumps or trees and carry large loads. I now have a 24 X 60 Monark that is about 30 years old. It is wonderful on Yukon river fishing trips of a week or 10 days. My neighbor and I have built several 20 X 56 boats that seem to be a good compromise for our conditions.
