 trailering a longtail.
im tryin to figure a way to strap down my motor without using a strap across the handle anymore. im tryin to come up with an idea of a way to put a lock of some sort on the part where it attaches to the transom. anybody done anything like this before.

 Re: trailering a longtail.
I had the same problem, made a transom saver to keep the shaft from flexin and bouncin on these wonderful Louisiana roads I put a small peice of channel on the boat trailer with a hole drilled through both sides, found a peice of thick wall pipe and drilled matching holes in it, then took the grinder and ground a slit into the pipe on the other end drilled holes through it and the skeg, I keep all of it on with d-pins and can take it off quick at the launch.

 Re: trailering a longtail.
Y'all are something else. Don't be afraid to tie off on the handle. That motor is balanced and there is nothing to worry about. I have a piece of rope that loops over the handle to keep the prop out the water if I need to do something in the boat while the motors running. sometimes I trailer with just that and the motor just floats there it doesn't bounce around like you think. Tying off on the handle will not cause any problems, trust me.

 Re: trailering a longtail.
i mounted a kolpin rhino grip gun holder in the middle if my back bench on my boat. when u load up just set the handle in there and strap it and go. works perfect.

 Re: trailering a longtail.
Use a piece of rope accross the gunnels and around the handle like GoDevil does. This puts no strain on the handle and does not jar the motor and frame like bolting it down.No offense but to the fella using a suction cup-do you really want to depend on a suction cup when trailering before daylight?

Shoot i dunno how thick it is, I just drug it up one day.
The walls are about 1/4 thick and thats more than enough.

 Re: trailering a longtail.
You get more wear and tear on the transom with an outboard than with a longtail.
I tie mine off by the handle just like the manf. showed and it works fine. Most of the weight is inside the hull anyway.

 Re: trailering a longtail.
It's not the weight that tears up the transom, it is the motor bouncing unsecured. You are correct about the outboard. But the longtail is balanced that's why it doesnt slap around.

 Re: trailering a longtail.
Just completed the "Woodie Buster" special. Used a piece of 1 1/4 conduit for practice(may even work), got a piece of aluminum pipe on the way.
