figure your bearing housing situation first. i built an old school using 1'' schedual 40 pipe. i made my end caps with pipe couplers bored to accept oil seals and bought 1 1/16'' bronze bushings and had them turned down to pipe id leaving a flange "gd rip off" . My friend made his with DOM tubing and bearing in a housing that presses on. plumbing supplies are easier to come by for me.

I'm currently building two long tails. I have ordered parts from mcmaster carr and grainger. I am making the shaft out of 3/4 steel shafts. The bronze sleeve bearings are 3/4 i.d. x 1 1/4 o.d. My outer tube is 1.5 dom tubing with .120 wall and the i.d. is around 1.260 leaving.010 slop but im using loctite 620 retaining compound to fill the gap. It has 400o p.s.i. shear strength and double lip seals. As soon as i'm finished i can send part numbers and drawings.
