 Stock 6.5 mad mud motor?
Is there anyone here that has tried the stock predator 6.5 on a mad mud motor plan built longtail? It seems most people here are looking for more speed, and I can understand that for most situations. I am just curious if anyone has tried this set up. I have a little hunting cabin in the woods of northern MN. There is a 385 acre wild rice lined lake at the cabin, and that is the only water I ever use. At present I have been using an old johnson 3 HP twin outboard and it actually gives me plenty of speed, a screaming 3 MPH! Only drawback is, I have trouble getting into the rice bed that holds the best duck hunting with it. I am hoping the mad mud motor will get me back in there a bit further. I will be running it on an old 50s model alumacraft 12 foot that is very narrow and light. I also use a light 14 foot sears cartopper. My question is, do you folks think I will be able to get at least the same speed from the 6.5 mud motor, that I was getting from my vintage 3hp outboard and at the same time get into the rice beds farther? There really is no mud flats on the lake. Probably the shallowest it will ever see is a foot of water. Thanks, Jim

Re: Stock 6.5 mad mud motor?
I tested my new 6.5HP GDLT yesterday, mounted on a 12' Springbok which is very much like a V-bow, flat stern cartopper. Rpm out of water 3870, in water 3450. With just one person and a starting battery, say total load weight 200lb, my top speed was 10 mph measured on a Garmin GPS. This is way faster than my 3HP Johnsons and Evinrudes.

That's my Plan B. Plan A is the 16HP GDLT and 16' Scott Duckboat.

Re: Stock 6.5 mad mud motor?
Friar,
I am in the same process, building the mount now. I used the predator.
Will know in a week or two how it oans out. I am in the same situation in Northern MN with all rice areas. I think these longtails are the only way to cut through the real thick stuff.
I am looking at a hop up kit from NR Racing online. You can add about 4 hp for a $75 kit pretty easily. Good option if you don't get the speed you want but I think you will be fine.
Where in MN are you?

Re: Stock 6.5 mad mud motor?
I have a predator 6.5 on a mad mud motor. I have a 1436 tracker and with 2 people and gear I stay around 5-6 mph. Empty as fast as 9 mph. I would like to jump up to next size prop. Probably pick up an mph or 2.

Re: Stock 6.5 mad mud motor?
I had the 420cc harbor freight and finigled the mad plans and came out with 16 mph with 2 people.
