I've tried running different headlights and spotlights on my boats up in Maine and out here in Northern California, Fog or mist are way more common than a clear morning on the water.

So headlights pretty much suck due to fog and sea smoke reflecting so much light that you can't see crap, I can see more without a light.

Do you guys run into this problem much down south?

What I have found better for my area is an Airboat type 100w ballcap with a rehostat to tone it down when you need to. This cuts down on the glare and seems to work great. Another plus is that the light is aimed where your head is looking. This works really well for me since when I'm running foggy rivers or guzzles, I can turn my head to the side to keep track of the weed line along the edge.


Anyone else run one of these for mud motoring??

Yep, I would say a large majority of the South Louisiana guys including myself simply prefer a hardhat light for all of the reasons you just listed, plus alot of guys here tend to use their boats for multiple jobs and a mounted light just gets in the way.

Same here, fog is a big problem. I turn my running lights on and thats it. Ive always been more comfortable with the lights off than on. I have a golight mounted on the front (unnecessary, it was given to me) that I click on maybe once a trip to find a corner Im supposed to turn at or something. But a gps with a track and moonlight seems to be easier down here as well.

I don't mind fog but 0-0 fog is an entirely different thing and I will not put myself or others in my boat in a situation where I'm not comfortable when I can't see the bow of my boat I know its not worth it. Only had one morning like that this past year.

I have spent many mornings getting turned around by the fog when I first started hunting. Now that I know my area alot better it isnt as bad but still can mess you up when trying a new spot. I use my running lights and just flash the Q-beam everyonce in a while.
