Post Gas Pressure Washer
Need some help/advice...i've got a 6.0hp generac pressure washer that i bought at a garage sale. I used it for a summer and then it acted like the pump wouldn't engage. I checked the water intake, nozzle...all of the stuff the manual said to do. I took it to a local briggs dealer and they said that the engine/carb needed to be rebuilt...(of course, in my driveway the engine would run fine). I got it home and pulled the hose on the gas tank and some water flowed...drained the water out and she cranked right up and ran like a top. SO, have any of you guys rebuilt or changed out the pump assembly on a pressure washer? How involved is it? Any tricks or tips?
Thanks,
Woody

I used to pressure wash houses on the side.

If you have the water hose pressured up, its a PITA to start against the pressure. Its easier to hold the handle on the wand open to release the pressure when starting. Also, if you have air in the water hose, it takes a while for the pump to prime. For a while I had a quick connect with a valve and would crank the pressure washer then immediately open the valve. Its not good to run the pump dry, but its a bitch to start the engine with pressure on the pump, so its kinda a catch 22 IMO

White1, have you ever replaced a pump? I read that the pumps that came on these models were crap and that it was typical for them to go out.

White1's info is good. With the tip removed, pull the trigger and let a stream of water come out as you are pulling the cord on the engine. They will not start easily if at all if you don't do this.

Pressure washers can be rebuilt. Depends on what is wrong with them. Did you run it dry? Did you let it freeze?

Worst case, you get the info (brand, model) off of the pump itself and call these guys up for a replacement pump:

Thanks for all the help...I cleaned out the spray gun and found some crude...got humpty back together and squeezed the trigger and pulled the cord...cranked right up and full on pressure. However, once i released the trigger, the pump would not kick in again...had to cut off the motor, let sit a few minutes, squeeze trigger, and then crank up...then it was back up and going...just a PITA, but at least it will work and i'm not out $200 on a new pump.
