 35hp with a stage 1 GTR on a 1748 Brother Breaux Bateau
Long story short I had a camshaft fail on me at the LA Mud Run, so I sent the motor is for warranty coverage for the repair. I did some thinking and while it was already in the shop I figured I should have some tweaking done to it. After getting all the details worked out with Hoyt I decided on a Stage 1 from Gator Tail. It has heads with stainless vlaves cut .020", Hoyts cam, and some added timing, and a Marsh Mellow muffler.
I went run it in Bayou Cortableau in Port Barre to get a feel of the new powerhead with mods. Much mo betta than a stock motor thats fo sho!
Conditions/ load 1748 Brother Breaux Bateau 35 GTR Stage 1 Load was Myself (190), Slambin (210 ish), rod box full of crap like I always have, and about 12 gallons of gas. Up current She was holding 28.5-29 Steady at 4150 RPMS Down current She kept a steady 30-30.5 at 4200 ish and bumped 31 a couple times Calm deep water 30-31 depending on the wind. I bumped 32 in the the shallows along the bank. This motor has no problems turning up to 4200 and a little more.
Throttle response is improved so much better over stock. Getting on step just happens, Mash the throttle and go. In the shallow along the bank it gets up like a rocket. The torque is better over stock and the overall power is much improved.
After the wait I can say I am more than satisfied with the new powerhead.

 Re: Hopped up the GTR
That's exactly what you git when Hoyt puts the voo-doo on it ..... you don't really git a whole bunch faster ..... which 30mph actually gits me exactly where I wants to go ...... but you git all that power !!!!! I have never failed to git on plane/step no matter how the boat is loaded. And .... since he did the work .. I have put over 300hrs of 'bout the most abusive run time anyone is gonna put on one and not goes to jail !!!! The only problem since his work has been a spark-plug boot lettin' the spark arc against the wind shroud and not to the plug ...... that rite there kicked not only mines ..... but several of mines friends butt !!!!! note to self : Whens you doin' yore trouble shootin' ...... look at the simple thangs first !!!!

 Re: Hopped up the GTR
What about warranty, does the extra work void it? Should I run the motor stock for a while before doing any work to it?

 Re: Hopped up the GTR
That's some pretty pretty good speeds and load carrying ability. What an opportunity to jump on that mixed in with some warranty. I bet you were sad and aggravated at first 'til that light bulb/idea went off in your head.

Re: 36hp with a stage 1 GTR on a 1748 Brother Breaux Bateau
Glad you like the mods. In my opinion its the best thing I've ever done to my Rig. Even though I don't use it as much as others,

Re: 36hp with a stage 1 GTR on a 1748 Brother Breaux Bateau
I always thought my stock motor was strongs compared to others, But the mods brought this engine out. It sounds good and pulls hard. Getting on step is a breeze. I cant wait to load it down and See what it does.

Re: 35hp with a stage 1 GTR on a 1748 Brother Breaux Bateau
Got some weight in it this weekend. It was me, my buddy, a 6500kw generator, 15 gallons gas for boat, 10 gallons for the generator, ice chest, and bags for the camp. The engine hops up on plane way quicker than stock and I held 27.5 mph in the Franklin canal. The first thing my buddy said was "damn this motor is so much better than it was stock". He was surprised how well it worked at hauling the camp load. I am defineatly happy with how this stage 1 performs. With that load i was turning 4050 rpms. On the rode back I put he generator in another boat and I was running 30 mph in the intracoastal and 28.5 up current In the Franklin canal.

Good deal maxxis. Guess rounding off that stock cam really was a blessing in disguise.

Re: 35hp with a stage 1 GTR on a 1748 Brother Breaux Bateau
Owen IIRC the cam is $300.
What you mean Different? The only other noises I hear more is the rockers/ valve operation. The cam has more lift and duration so therfore more movement will make a little more noise. With the cam you can tell in the exhaust tone is deeper.
