Buying my first longtail (used).....help w what to look for?
Hey all, Found a used Go-Devil longtail for sale in my area. Its a 9 hp Briggs model. I dont know the year of it right now, still have to call the seller to set things up. I have no personal experence with any mud motors other than what I have learned on here.... This will be going on a 14 foot john boat and an Arthur Armstrong Widgeon. I have heard to check the seals (not sure where they are) and the prop to make sure they are ok. The owner says it has very low hours but has been sitting for about a year but ran great before it was put up...... Anyone have any other advise as to what to look for before I buy? If it is in decent running shape, is $875 a fair price?
One more thing......If and when I decide I need more HP, can I swap in a bigger motor on this same frame? Sorry for the stupid questions......and thanks!

I think you can go up to a 13hp without any modification to anything. I had a 9hp go-devil and miss it. You should go bigger if you can or if you think you will be getting a bigger boat. I had mine on a 14x42.. I think and it would get on plane with me and a hunting load but with two guys it wouldnt, but it wouldnt get stuck. $875 is a little high, shop around on CL or LA sportsman if you are in that area.

I'm with these guys.. Save up a little more and get a bigger motor, unless its all you can afford. I run a 16hp on my 14 foot boat and it runs well. but anything less and I don think I would be very satisfied with its performance. at the end of the season you should be able to pick up a bigger motor for a reasonable price. dont be in a hurry.. and I would ask to run the motor before paying for it also.

yea that is over priced espically for a 9 h.p, i bought my 13 h.p longtail for $60! it needed some work, but hell it was a deal. you better off saving your money for a larger motor

Re: Buying my first longtail (used).....help w what to look
Thanks all,
I know mud motors are like guns safes, sheds, and decoy trailers, once you get one, you regret not getting a bigger one. I would like the think at least a 13 hp would do fine on my 14' john and AA Widgeon.....I just cant afford a new one.
I still havent gotten a call back from the seller, not sure what is going on there. I wish I did live closer to some of you guys as you seem to have more mud motors at a better price than we do here in Delaware......... There is a 6.5 longtail for sale around here for $1200 or so..just to give you an idea.
Maybe I will go the do-it-yourself route and buy some plans off of E-Bay so I can get bigger HP from the get go....
Thanks again Lookinup

You can ship these things... Keep an eye on here, louisianasportsman, and craigslist. Not everyone is willing to ship, but for the prices they are going for up there, you should easily be able to cover shipping cost if you can find a seller willing to do it.

Re: Buying my first longtail (used).....help w what to look
Thanks all, Well, I have not received a call back from the seller after a phone call and some emails to him. Guess its time to start my search all over again. Guess I will look for a 13hp longtail unless I hit the lottery and spring for a CopperHead 12.
Thanks again Lookinup
