I have a 2005 Beavertail 1748 with a Kohler 27 long shaft. We recently discovered the yoke must have loosened up overtime on the shaft and the keyway is damaged. The key slid up and also busted off the grease zerk on the u joint.

Wondering what the best fix is. I was thinking about putting in a new key and welding along the damaged side of the keyway. Then installing into a new yoke and spot welding the shaft to yoke junction...

Instead, if I need to replace the damaged pieces, where can I get a replacement shaft, yoke, and U-joint? Does anyone have part #s?

The U joint needs to be replcaed no matter what due to the damaged grease zerk. The only numbers I can find on the U-joint are Spicer HS SPR W5. Any recommendations and replacment part numbers would be greatly appreciated.

How much does a new shaft usually run?

just replace the zerk, not the whole u joint. not sure if the u joint is the 'split' style, with a bolt going thru it. but if it is, put the key back in place, tack it to the ujoint and tighten the hell outta the bolt, ull be jus fine

The zerk threads are broke off inside of the u-joint. I tried using a small extractor tool to get them out, and then that broke off inside of the zerk That is why I probably have to replace the u-joint.

As worn as the driveshaft keyway is, I don't think a new key will sit very square inside the key way (it wants to roll over diagonally). Anybody see a problem with spot welding the key in to the drive shaft keyway in a square position? My plans would then be to install that into the new u-joint/yoke and then tack about three different spot between the yoke and driveshaft. I would think that should hold?

yeah im pretty sure that would be fine

thatll be just fine but if you really wanna fix it right take it to an electric motor repair shop. they can fix that keyway right up.
