I have a Kohler 27. I don't know for sure, but I suspect that my motor is not charging the battery like it should... can you check the stator just like an alternator, or is there a different method?

I don't think you can stick a wrench to the back of it and see if it sticks

I think it is up under the flywheel but I could be wrong. Seems like there is a rectifier or something like that in the system too.
Best bet would probably be to call the local lawn mower repair shop and ask them how to test, may be as simple as hooking a voltage meter up

Kook you got it all wrong, that is the method for checking the plug wires

Put a meter on the battery and rev up the rpms. Should show about 14.5v if working properly. Battery should be 12-12.5v and you will NOT see a change after reving the motor if its not charging. I believe those are the numbers anyway.

But like Poker said, that is the easiest way to begin.

The rectifiers are notorious for going out on these motors. Test the output with a mutlimeter and if the voltage is low at 2k RPMs, that most likely is the cuprit.

Pull the rotor and gurter....cross tap wires to check for spark-

Spark good....no spark bad.

May be a stupid ques. but how old is your battery? That too may be the culprit.
