Post hydraulic steering
I run a 17' Tims Custom flat with a 35GTR. I use my boat for fishing more than anything else and would like to convert to remote hydraulic steering on a center console. In doing a little research it seems the Bay Star system from Teleflex is a very common system. Is this a good brand to use for my application? If not, can someone knowledgable about this topic recommend a better option? What tyoe of throttle system should I purchase? Also, I know a kit is available from Gatortail for this conversion, how is the reverse actuated on a remote steering motor?

Thanks in advance!
Tim

when i asked hoyt why they didnt use bay star, he told me he had too many problems with them. GT uses ultraflex steering. i had a problem with mine when i first bought the boat, but that was from a bad hydraulic cylinder. GT changed the system under warranty for me and i havent had a problem since. you will have to get the steering rated for either 150 or 250 hp. the throttle is a seaworld stainless single control lever which controls only the throttle. the switches would need to be moved to the CC. Also the reverse is actuated by stepping on a pedal on the floor under the console.

Thanks for the info Slambin. I did some looking into the Ultraflex systems and see a few different models. Can you tell me which model is compatible with the Gatortail mudmotors? I see both front and side mount cylinders, as well as models that fit Yamaha, Honda, Evinrude, etc. Of course they don't list one that is compatable with mudmotors. Which model do you have, you seem satisfied with yours.

Thanks guys! Fore and Aft opens at 9, I'll give'em a call and see what the damage will be. I'll get working on finding the throttle system now.

Well I got the steering system ordered from Fore and Aft, they had the kit on special for $699.00.
But I'm not having any luck finding the throttle control. I see plenty of single lever dual function units, but I think what I'm looking for is single lever single function. Am I wrong? Can anybody recommend a good throttle control. I tried to google the Seaworld stainless control unit Slambin told me about, but haven't had any luck finding that model.

Thanks
Tim

i know i tried searching for it and couldnt find it at all. but heres a pic of the box it came in...I would think any control similar to this could work for you but i have been wrong before

http://www.teleflexmarine.com/products/ ... nd-twin-s/

this on may work...its the same principle of the one i have. it will only work the throttle

Post Re: hydraulic steering
Alright guys, I need a little more help. I got my remote steering kit from Gartor
Tail, and I bought a hydraulic kit from Fore and Aft marine. I planned on doing the install today, but didn't realize I needed special sealant for the steering connections. I had planned on using teflon tape until I read in the instructions that liquid sealant was advised. Today being Sunday I didn't even attempt to find the correct sealant. So instead I concentrated on the wiring, and layout for the helm. It went pretty well, but looking ahead to the steering install, I'm not too sure about where to mount the steering arm that came with the Gator Tail kit. This Kit comes with no instructions at all. Although most of it was pretty easy to figure out, for the price of that kit, instruction isn't too much to ask for! I figure the arm mounts where the tiller handle was, but I'm not sure. Also, it seems like it shound have 2 mounting holes instead of the one provided. But then again I guess this is a tried and true application, so I'm sure it will be sturdy enough to get the job done. Anyway, take a look at the part in the pic, and if anyone can explain of show me a pic of where it mounts, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks
Tim

If you look under the trim mount there is a grease zert. That bracket goes from the bolt under that zert to the front of the motor which then connects to the bracket from the ram.

Slambin, you've been a great help through this whole experience. I don't think I'd have figured that one out without your help. If you could, take one more pic for me when you get a chance. Post a pic of your reverse pedal please.

Thanks
Tim

Hey Slambin, I need your assistance once again. I found a single function throttle control, it takes the standard 33c morse type cable they all seem to use. The latest problem is adapting the cable end to the Briggs engine throttle linkage. The marine distributor has alot of different adaptors, but none that seem to work for this application. Can you direct me to the right place to get them, or provide a pic I can show the distributor and maybe he can match me up with something?

Thanks!

If you get in a jam, call GT for the parts.

I called there several times a for a couple of weeks trying to get steering parts and information, getting someone knowledgable on the phone was not easy. I was told they were very busy, and moving. I'm sure things will be back to normal there soon, but for now I've been relying on Slambin, and he has been very helpful.

I'm not sure. I had called 2 or 3 times and left messages, I called back and was asked if I wanted to leave a message. I told the young lady I had already left messages the past couple of days without a callback, she apologized and said that they had been very busy with the move. I've never been to their place.

pretty much what i found out is that the throttle cable has to be ran to the left side of the motor to a bracket that is behind the carb...the cable is then ran to the throttle on the carb to push the throttle open. Remember, the cable must PUSH the throttle open on the CC model, not pull it open like on the tiller. sorry i just got to get this to you, i been busy as all get out today.
