Post 2011 FLOOD UPDATES!
I wanted to start a centralized thread to keep up with the flooding situation. Please use it to post about any updates on what's happening. I know we have several members who are in harms way so communication is key. We've also got some members who are in the know about what's happening so any info you could convey would help.

Our last council meeting in Loreauville we discussed the situation and that we are in no immediate danger unless the levee fails. Some residents in attendance explained that in the flood of 1927, there were still dry areas in Loreauville. We also have an old railroad track bed that sort of serves as another levee that helped us.

God forbid we have massive flooding, but with all the mudmotor rigs we have here, it would be a great idea to organize a some sort of floatilla of sorts in case things get real bad that could provide rescue assistance etc., for all affected areas. Just a thought.

Let me know what you guys think and keep posting valuable info on this thread.

Charenton Floodgates are now being sandbagged on top as we speak. They were cable locked yesterday.

I bet we could have at least 100 boats lined up if we needed to. That's what I'm talking about.

Let's keep this thread free of BS and have only good input/updates to the situation.

Keep up the updates coming!

New forecast for river stage in Butte Larose as of today is 29.2 feet. Up 2 feet from yesterday!!!!!! Not good. The Levee is full of engineers today, scrambling around scratching there heads. There are some dump trucks on the west levee dropping lime stone on the side of levee.

Post Re: FLOOD UPDATES
The Corp. of Engineers love to "Toot their own horn", but they have been pretty quiet. They don't like what they know, because it is what they have feared may happen one day. In theory the systems they have in place should work, but they have never been tested to the extent that they will be soon. In 1973 it was tested with less water than we will face soon, and the Corp. came extreamly close to losing their crown accomplishment (The Old River Control Structure) If all the levee's hold, then they face the strong possibility of losing the Old River Control Structure. This would be more disasterous than any flooding (even a levee breach in Baton Rouge) because this would change the course of the Mississippi River to flow down the Atchafalaya permanatly. If that were to happen.............. well I'll let you figure it out.

Here's a UStream Live Video from the Morganza Spillway:

Feed is not live now, should be prior to opening.

Word is the gates will be open around 3pm today.

Thanks for posting this BradS (stole it from your FB page) 8-)

I'm watching it on the news. Its both amazing and disgusting at the same time. To see this thing work is amazing but knowing what this will cause makes me sick. I've gotta believe that there is something else that could have been done. Dredge out the sediment in the river to make it hold more water? Or more importantly, raise the damn levees! If they were at 25 feet of protection they would not have had to open this spillway.

Here's a video of the Morganza being opened:

Didn't take long to fill up that area, and that's just one gate.

The flooding threat in Louisiana is changing, Gov. Bobby Jindal said Monday after the Army Corps of Engineers lowered its projections for the Mississippi River.
Jindal said months of drought lowered water levels in the Ouachita and Red rivers, so less backwater flooding is expected in northern parishes.
Drought also increased the soil's capacity to absorb water, slowing the movement of diverted river water that began flowing through the Morganza spillway over the weekend, Jindal said.
Col. Ed Fleming said Monday that the corps also has revised downward river crest estimates due to the spillway opening. The Bonnet Carre spillway near New Orleans also is operating.
Jindal said the corps expects to open fewer gates at Morganza, near Baton Rouge, than previously expected to divert water into the Atchafalaya River.

New revised estimate: Near 27' at Butte Larose may 24th!!!!! Good for me, still bad for others. If I don't get flooded I'll have plenty of time to help others less fortunate.
