Got a question on using a jack plate with a MM. Here is my set-up. I have a custom built john boat for duck hunting small water. Got tired of flimsy, thin and tipsy small johns so I had one made to my specs. It is 11 ft long but 48 wide across the bottom. Hull is .100 g and the sides are deep. Transom is 19". Looking at a Copperhead 10hp but transom is too tall. I can add a fixed jack plate that will get the Copperhead down to the right trim and it has a 4" setback. Looks to me like it should work. Anybody have experience with jack plates and MM? The plate I am looking at is rated for up to 35HP.

Jack plates are designed to work with tunnel hulls & mud motors do not perform well with tunnels so short answer is that most don't mess with the jack plate. Seems like it could work in your example but who knows. If it did work I'd suggest a manual one, set it in the sweet spot & forget!

never seen a fixed jack plate used to lower a motor, only to raise it. i would be concerned with the handle hitting the top of the transom when trying to raise the motor or hitting submerged objects. best bet is to cut the transom down to 15-16".

It will work if the right person makes it. Have had two different surface drive rigs that NEEDED a fixed position jack plate to set the motor correctly, both of these where store bought alum. hulls that initially been used for another purpose. The only thing is with a big load, your likely to submarine your motor lowering it rather than raising it. These guys are right, build it right the first time and its not a problem, but i understand where ya coming from.

Im sure Copperhead can find it in them to make a belt housing a little longer for a tall transom.

I been lookin' at it and I think my answer would be to cut down the transom. Problems with the trim knob hitting the transom and also problems tilting the motor as pointed out above. Talked to our welding instructor here at the college where I work and they said they could probably help me out with the mod to my transom.

call copperhead and see if they will build you a tall transom motor, with that short of a boat you may need that tall transom to help with backwash.
