Post vanguard mods.
Iv recently been looking at all the mods that can be done to the bb vaguards. what of these mods: carb, heads, roller rockers, cam, pistons, connecting rod, valvesprings, stainless valves, and pushrods are mods that will actually decrease the life of your engine? Iv spoken with several people that said if your planning to put any decent ammount of hours on your engine stick to stage 1 because level 2 and 3 will greatly decrease engine life. seems to me all of these billet and stainless aftermarket parts would last much longer than the stock internals. Not saying im going to go out and do a stage 3 but imo i would guess the much higher than rater rpm would be a large contributer of the engines demise.

Ask River.

Seriously if you are worried about reliability and durability, do you really think you need to be messing with mods?

A boat is just a hole in the water that you throw money into.

A carb will help carry a load well, but did not help with hole shot on my rig.
a cam hurts on bottom end and only added r 2 mph on my rig. ( that was with rods pistons and roller rockers.)

GD SD 20x60 heavy boat

JStock just me in boat 25mph , carb kit evt or muddy buddy 27mph add exh evt quite or bps crossover 27.5.

Stage 3 ran 1 hour before cam failed 30 mph

With 3 men and heavy hard blind stage 1 18mph and terrible hole shot.

Stage 3 after replacing cam with gear change 27mph and great hole shot.

I would go dual 23 hp if I were to do another rig (same money)

If you are playing with a 16x60 or so a single 35 will do .

Do the Heads first

Valve seal is a big deal with these motors, factory just drops in and does no grinding. Get some oversize valves and have a triple angle seat done.

I have a guy in Old Jefferson who can do that cheap with Manley high flow valves. PM you # and I will give you the details.

I would go with the mb carb set up and clean up the intake. You won't lose cooling fins that way. If you are handy the factory carb can be made to run. Do a search on the old site. I would do evt only if going stage 3

If you are not decking heads the MB crossover is the way to go. it had a better hole shot than the evt.

A lot can be done with changing gears, and playing with the Governor and doing head work. You can't do a gear change with a long tail, building for bottom end is more important. that is were valve seal and decking the heads a little makes a big deal of difference.
