South Fork boats with a longtail
I was thinking about getting a 14x42 Southfork and hanging a 11 hp longtail off the back. Would you guys think this is a good combo or bad. Need some serious advice?

looks basically like a run of the mill allwelded jon boat. should run like a longtail. get a .1-.125 bottom and youll do good. i might would go with a skinnier boat. i got an 11hp on a 1438, i kinda wish mine was longer, but i wouldnt wanna go any wider.

Re: South Fork boats with a longtail
Go with at least a 16 foot boat. Longtails perform a LOT better on a longer boat! Width don't seem to make a lot of difference. I chanced from a 14x40 to a 16x36 on Coco's advice a few years back. The 16' is about 4 to 5 MPH FASTER even though it weighs about 300 pounds MORE than the 14x40.

South Fork boats with a longtail
I probably would get a 16 foot if I was just planning on having a good time or for recreational use but the reason I'm kind of iffy about getting such a large boat is cause I'm going to be weaving I'n and out of timber and it's hard to maneuver I'n a long azz boat

South Fork boats with a longtail
Thanks for the advice guys, I'm just curious thats the reason y'all are saying a longer boat is better, is it because it will handle and maneuver alot better. Correct me if I'm wrong and give me some more reasons why a just get a longer boat. I need to be convinced

Re: South Fork boats with a longtail
There is more surface area to displace the wieght to get the hull planed out and running flat.
There is just something about a mudmotor on a long hull, with an outboard most people who want to go faster get a smaller boat, it seems the opposite to an extent with a mm.
You shouldn't have any problem with a 16' boat in the timber.

Re: South Fork boats with a longtail
Coco told me that you need the length to pull the bow down and make it plane off right. I just know that my 16x36 is a LOT faster that the 14x40! Easer to hide and NP going through the timber. I have also found that a small outboard, like a 6 or 7 1/2 will plane a 16 ft. but not a 12 or 14. same reason I guess. Of course, it MAY have something to do with my fat ass sitting in the stern Just sayin' Mike W. = Large Mammal !
