I haven't had a dog since I was a kid and now I'm thinking about buying one and I'm just curious as to what do most of you own? I know the ideal dog for duck hunting would be a lab but since there's been a spike in crime around my house, I'm thinking about getting a German Shepherd. Can any of you Lab owners tell me how well you think your dog can guard your house?

An English bulldog. She retrieves ok but not so good in the water. I'd say probably negative on that breed for security also. Hope this helps

I'll tell you what unless you know my labs anbd say their name they are very protective.. Not even a squirell gets into the yard with out them goin nuts

The lab that I own now is very laid back. My wife and I often joke about the fact that she would more than likely help carry our stuff out if we were robbed. The labs I had in the past were very protective and territorial.

Yeah mine lay around the house mosta the day but if someone pulls up they know it long before I do and they let us know. I doubt they would ever be violent but they sound mean....lol

X2 on pit bull. This is my big boy. Rescued at 4 weeks, bottle fed until 9 weeks and hasn't left my side once. Not a mean bone in his body. More intimidating than anything. Will also retrieve anything u throw land or water

Lab/ Curr mix --- She is a sweetheart and loves to retrieve. Now we gonna see how she acts when I get her back from the trainer before I brag on her hunting skills LOL

the best two dogs i ever owned was a russian wolfhound and a terrier mix. we lost the wolfhound down by bayou sorrel. that darn dog had the reddist eyes you ever seen. he was about 7 to 8 feet long and he learned that chasing wolfs or bears. that if he ran on his back legs he could run thru the woods faster i swear that dog was so tuff he could stop bullets. the other terrier mix was also lost down by hwy 2 down by the cutoff. fastest dog i ever saw he was the size of a racoon. he had a strong dislike of el-caminos. if anybody finds them please call me we miss them two dogs.

My first BL female was a mean mofo. Had to tie her in the boat at the launch or she wanted to fight any other dog that came near. She wouldn't let people get near my boat or truck unless I was right there. My last lab is as gental and layed back as one can get. So it could go either way but labs tend to be on the nice side. I would not have a dog unless it hunts, but thats just me.

my lab is very protective and we always know when someone is around our house because he is very quick to let us know

Catahoula's and Labs

Weimaraner. Mine loved to retrieve/hunt and was super protective. My dad liked him so much he now has two of them. They require alot of attention though, they can't stand to be left alone

My lab is a friendly, great family dog and lovable as hell to the people she knows. If a stranger came in our house or yard and approached either my wife or kids she'd bite his nuts off.

I think dogs r just like folks. Some r lovers & some r fighters. Had pit as a kid that wouldnt hurt a fly & a yorkie that bit everybody other than wife & i that got close.

Get a lab and a 12Ga. Lab for the first response and the 12 Ga to back up the dog.

I've got an Aussie and a heeler in the house. The Aussie is one bad lil b!tch. She hates strangers. She doesn't like the mother-in-law, either. That's okay in my book. However, the heeler will team up with her if something ain't right.

I like German Shepards, very protective of your family. The lab and the Jack Russels will also let you know when someone is around. The one thing to check is if your homeowners policy will allow you to have the dog you want.

Here is a list of dogs that are commonly considered high-risk dogs, but your insurance company may have more dogs than what is on this list: Rottweilers, Pit Bulls, German Shepherds, Doberman Pinschers, Akitas, Chow Chows, Wolf hybrids, Presa/Dogo Canarios

Just check with your agent, hate to see someone get a dog, and then have to try to get coverage!!

I had an Akita. He was an awesome dog. He could growl tho and he sounded like a grizzley.
