Minimum HP for a longtail on a 1648 jon?
What horsepower should i look for to push a 16' jon decently? I'm not looking to set any speed records, just something to get the job done.

I would recommend nothing smaller than a 23 Briggs...you are better off with a 25/27 Kohler to push the 1648. I have a 1648 Grizzly, not ideal, but it gets the job done, and I have a 27 Kohler MB longtail. I get 20 mph by myself and 17.8 mph with two hunters and gear. I believe the Briggs 23 comes with both a pull start and electric start, that is one thing the 25 or 27 Kohler does not have.

I have a Grizzly 1548 and I just put a 27 hp Backwater LT on it and I am getting about 18 with just me, and 15 with 2 guys and fair gear. I am still figuring out weight distribution, but don't expect those numbers to change a whole lot.

I would try a 25-27 hp longtail for that boat... my 1548 and 27 hp mudbuddy will do 19mph with me...Unless you have hp restrictions where you hunt..your hull will be another factor on how the motor preforms.

23 hp minimum. 9x5 prop for a load, 9x6 for speed.

23 hp longtail - if you need to get 15 mph plus with max loads - 20 mph light....
Most common quote here "Get all the HP you can afford"
However for years we pushed a bigger boat with 4 to 5 guys across some nasty floating veggies with an ancient 8 hp gdlt on a 1 mile square lease and our blind was on the back side of the lease.... You just get up 15 minutes earlier - LOL

Thank you, Gigafowl, for that lucid perspective...I started with a 1436 and an 18 hp and it was slow but got the job done. I bet you had fun and good conversation during that slow traverse! All the speed today and maybe we lost a little of that in the process, but I like to get up early and enjoy the ride- the ride out is a great thing to me, and I do not hurry back.

My first mufmotor was an 8hp gdlt on a 1648 lowe we didnt get there very quick but we got where we wanted and got back nothing flashy but got the job done were as our outboard wouldnt do anything at all due to low water.
