just finished putting the shaft on my 27GDLT 6ft. I am now trying to install my prop. However the shaft does not line up in the lower seal hub, even though its centered in the shaft housing. I ran it for a few secs and saw smoke and coming out of the end. What could be the problem if there is one and how do I fix it? Any and all info greatly appreciated!

Is the tube bent?

I'm pretty sure it's not seeing as the shaft is centered in the tube, not the seal housing

May sound stupid , but do you have bushings in the tube, didn't look like it from the picture, but I was viewing it on my phone, also when you ran it and it and saw smoke did you have grease in the tube

All seals and bushings are in (not loose either) and shaft is fully greased

I'm no expert but thought I might have an idea. If your hub is threaded onto the tube, it may be crossthreaded or otherwise misaligned (bent as stated?). There's no other explanation if it's centered in the tube and not the hub. It has to be a hub that's been been/stripped, or a crossthreaded hub.

Put a straight edge on the tube and rule that out.

get some .003 -.005" shim stock and run it around the shaft inside the bushing and see where its touching. did you move your motor or the cranside yoke? if you run an old school top bushing i'd say out of alignment. if bearings on the top then bent tube. ive had to put mine on the pipe bender a few times. gd has picture of this procedure in the online manual.

is your shaft bent? rotate it a few times and see if it wobbles around.

not to confuse the post...let me state that I'm also working on the boat with CTdeathfrombelow...the shaft is brand new. the seal housing isn't sitting right on the shaft housing. aside from replacing the whole shaft housing what other options are there. the only one I've come up with is to bore the the hole in the housing cap. is it possible to rethread the shaft housing while its still attached...forgive the rambling but I'm trying to brainstorm. thanks in advance.

Cut everything an inch or so shorter, retread, move cav plate up, and hope everything works out.

you might bet able to get a die on there not sure. is it the left handed thread model or the older model? if its older then get a 1'' npt pipe coupler and try to get it started straight. Then do 1/4 turns and tap the coupler with a 2lb hammer as you are twisting. should get you back right. as for the end cap, just get another one if its ate up. hope this helps..
