 Alternator on a LT
So i was wondering the other day about maybe trying to put a small maybe 50 amp alternator on the longtail im building and putting a pulley on the motor shaft and then putting the u joint on and i was wondering if anybody has done it and has pics or tips on how to mke it work right. I would rather have a alternator because all the stuff in my boat is 12v and that way i could charge my batt while the motor is running.

 Re: Alternator on a LT
im running a 9 horse go devil electric start and have headlights, running, lights, and on board lights and i havent charged my battery for about 3 weeks since ive gotten the motor but it seems to keep it charged pretty good just from the motor running....dont thing it has an alternator but from the flywheel magnet i believe (not sure but thats what i thought) i also have done the same thing with my 4 wheeler for the plow in the winter time...it seems to do the trick but you gotta have electric star...hope that helps

Yes, your 9 hp Honda has a small alternator. It won't charge at much besides WOT though.
What motor do you plan to add this on to?

 Re: Alternator on a LT
I had a 13 with electric start, it's a good motor and I never ran a battery down. Like the 9, it won't charge very much.
What all do you plan to hook up to the battery?

 Re: Alternator on a LT
Google magneto flywheel alternators. They have replacements that you can put on.

 Re: Alternator on a LT
Running an actual alternater off a pickup will suck some power from the motor, but will charge the Fawk out of a battery!

 Re: Alternator on a LT
And thats why i want to put an alternator on i dont think a 50 amp one will take that much poweraway and since the charging systems on the motors themselves only charge at wot it would be nice to be able to charge the battery if i am just cruisin around or if i am creepin real slow gig fishing

 Re: Alternator on a LT
I recall Bayou boy saying he knew somone who built a battery charger with an Alternater and a 3.5 HP briggs and and it had its ass full turning it when the Alternater was making power.

 Re: Alternator on a LT
well thats my other option is to take a smaller i was thinkin like a 6.5 i dont think id go smaller than that but make a little platform and mout both to gether just like a generator and use that instead of having an alternator on a lt. i was really just trying to see if anybody had tried it and what their results were.
