This is a good post and something I never completely figured out before I sold my PD rig.

I had this exact situation come up, and could reverse out but I was nervous about running hard in reverse and banging a stump.

I could picture bad stuff happening jamming into a stump on plane in reverse even though in theory if it isn't sticking out of the water you should have no problem getting over it.

My old boat was a 52" with bottom runners. It seemed like the transom sunk low in the water and it could be tough to jump it up in real shallow hard bottom. Calf deep? Not with a load. and if/when I get another mud boat I am going to try a smooth bottom 60" boat so I can hopefully jump it up going forward in less water with a load.

West, you've still got the skeg in front of the prop on the PD. One thing I found when hauling a load in FPR was to lock the block in place and stand as far forwad (away from the motor) and basically run the tiller with your arm extended.
Get as much weight out of the back of the boat as possible to let the motor lift up. I had a heavy 1854 with 24" sides and when I ran it like this the bow would be at the waterline.

I gotta do this too to get my transom up on plane...plus if you eat a stump you wont get a mouthful of 1200 degree muffler maybe just a lift handle nose job instead

Here is how I picture it happenin:

The boys shoot the last drake for the day, we pack up all the decoys, 8 guns and zip up all the 40# bags full of calls, shells, Twinkies, and undrank Mountain Dew. Ole' WW says, "Watch this s**t boys" throws it in reverse and nails it. He watches carefully for stumps up on plane in reverse but can't resist looking over his shoulder to see just how nervous but admiring his buds are. About then, they sail over a stump that clears the transom but lifts the bow and it's all good except for stump #2 that snags the trim lip of the boat, brings them to a dead stop and face plants WW either against his PD or face flat down in the water where WW's buds have to think over whether or not they will save him from drowning in eight inches of water...

(BTW I think they would save me, but only because if they don't they won't be able to bring it up to me every time they get a chance for the next 40 years.)

I like forward because I figure the worst that can happen is we hit something and come to a dead stop and I have 18' to scrub speed before faceplanting on the deck. Doesn't sound as bad.

I'll add that I think somebody with more experience running mm's could have run my boat better than I did.

I was just getting it really figured out when I sold it.
