 Re: Chocolate male
I can't take another dog right now, but I'd like to give a few bucks towards his surgery. Would that be possible? Perhaps we could get him his surgery. Then it would be easier to find him a new home.

 Re: Chocolate male
I think we need a put up for the pups ride. Everyone ponies up some cash to ride and all funds go to the dogs.

 Re: Chocolate male
Those that PM'd me I have Pm'd back. I'm working on getting more info on this guy. Offers to chip-in and donate to his surgery, well, that is AWESOME. I can get NOLA Lab Rescue to setup a chip-in for him and you all can donate through that. From what I understand a complete ACL surgery can range between 1200-1500 depending on vet. That is even with a Rescue Discount. We are searching other options to see if we can get it done for less. Possibly at LSU. We are also looking for other orgs to help out with cost. There are some out there that help fund things like this. But by all means, you are more than welcomed to chip-in. Also, donations to NOLA Lab Rescue are tax deductable. I'll post up once I get more info. Thanks guys.

 Re: Chocolate male
Been through this with one of my labs. We went to The vets told me that essentially the joint is not very well reinforced. The knee joint on a lab is not a ball and socket joint like it "should be", and all the stress is on the ligaments and tendons. The surgery is preformed by basically creating a ball and socket joint by grinding down the bones to create the joint, then reattaching the ACL. Supposedly, this new joint helps take the strain off on the muscles. It makes the effected leg slightly shorter than the other, but not really enough to notice. This does however make the other leg subject to tear as well. I was quoted $1500 to have it done 12 years ago. The surgery is needed if the dog is to be an active hunting dog. Otherwise, the leg will mend with rest and the dog can live out it's years with a slight limp. I retired my dog from hunting and did not get the surgery. He lived the next 10 years with only a slight limp when he got up from sleeping or after hard playing in the yard.
Just thought I'd share my experience with this.

 Re: Chocolate male
Good to know handiman. So you are saying, for him to be jsut a house dog, this surgery is more than likely not needed. If he is to be an active dog, he may need it?

 Re: Chocolate male

 Re: Chocolate male
Well guys. Drake is being taken in by NOLA Lab Rescue and will be fostered in Michigan. He will receive his surgery there and begin therapy with someone that has dealt with this before. In the meantime, for those that mentioned donating, you can go here and do so through Paypal. You don't need a PP account, you can use a CC. If you rather not pay that way, l'm sure we can work something else out. If you pay by paypal, when you review your donation, there is a link that will open a box for special instructions. In that box if you put "donation for Drakes' Surgery", it will go directly into his account for that surgery. I have already cleared this with NOLA admins and they said this is how they have done things in the past. Here is the direct link to the Paypal: Or visit http://www.nolalabrescue.com for the link. Thanks in advance. And thanks to MMT for allowing me to get help for the dogs. I can garuntee they appreciate more than I do.

 Re: Chocolate male
Here is the chip-in for Drake. As you will see the goal is set for $1200. This could be acheived in very little time. Every little bit helps.
Thanks in advance guys. I promise it's is very appreciated.

 Re: Chocolate male
Just wanted to pass this on. Drake had his surgery (actually weeks ago) and is in a foster home in Michigan. He'll stay there till his rehab is done. Which is coming along very good. Not sure if he'll be able to hunt again or not. His foster says he is great. Listens very well and is a pretty good inside dog. Here are a few recent pics of him. He looks so much different than the pic in the crate. On the way to hydrotherapy

 Re: Chocolate male
We could just do the NOLA Lab Rescue Mudboat ride. That way all the funds can go into thier account for all the rescues. Maybe even have some raffles if we can get some prizes donated.

 Re: Chocolate male
An update on Drake. He was adopted a month or so ago. He has a slight limp but is doing very well. The new owner has been in contact with the original owner, trying to work on the commands that he was taught from the beginning. This is what she had to say about him "I have been in touch with his previous owner to go over all the "commands" that he knows and as I suspected, you could probably get him to cook dinner with just a few tweaks to his existing training. He is WAY smart ".
Here is his pic. He is on the left.
