Post 13 beaver - 1440 no plane
So, was wondering what could be wrong:
New 13 beavertail on a new Lowe 1440m

The prop has a 4" pitch (which seems normal for this size/class motor). But with one person (175 lbs.) in an empty boat, it still does not plane even at WOT. It feels plenty strong, like the torque is there, b/c it moves along at the same speed pushing through the water with three people. The boat is definately moving like a barge. Should there be more pitch on the prop with this boat?

Do you know what your rpm's are? It should plane with just you in the boat, but it probably never will with 3 in it. What's the bottom of the boat look like. What kinda weight do you have in the boat other than people?

There's no tach, but the boat was completely empty and there's maybe 5 hours on the engine. Everything is stock, but still very new. There shouldn't be rpm loss this early or the engine governed down too low to plane, right?
The 1440m is a riveted model with .064 thickness at 205lbs.

I run a 16 gdlt on a 1448 riveted and it will plane with me and another guy and my duck gear no prob. I have used a 9x6 and a 9x3 prop with no probs. I also ran a 8hp gdlt on the same boat. It would plane out with my kids sitting up front with no load. Your combo should plane out. Cav plate adjustment?

Okay, so I don't feel crazy now-

The cav plate seems right. It does not cause drag. Will keep looking it over.

When i bought my brand new 16 go devil from go devil the prop was wrong. I went run the boat and was getting 15mph by myself on a 14x44. I was only getting 2700 rpm's. I called Cocco and he told me how to adjust the governor. The rpm's out of water went up but not in the water. He had me bring it back in and they adjusted the prop. I now run 4200rpm's out of water and 3300 rpm's in water. Im now running 17.5 by myself and 15 loaded for hunting with my son. Get a mini tach and stop guessing. Will also help you keep up with engine hours.

I have an 8hp that will plane a 14' riveted boat. I have a 7x4 prop on it a 13 should be an 8x4. Try setting the cav plate so it want to blow out of the water a little then pull up hard on the tiller to get it to run at the right depth. If you pick up speed above what its been running then the tail of your boat is too heavy and pods would help. pulling up hard on the tiller will lift the boats ass end up and push the nose down to help it plane out.

Got it out today and with 350lbs in the boat (2 people) and running with cav plate just barely under the surface, best speed was 12 on GPS. Prop is 8x4. Letting the plate go to the depth it wanted, we got 10 1/2. We had the boat balanced out as best as possible this time. Seemed less like a barge today- almost like it was barely riding on plane. Woot! But if there was someone sitting all the way forward to push the nose down- speed suffered.
