Not real sure so don't quote me here. But I believe the reason for the SD havin more speed than the LT is the fact that SD's have gears or pullies depending on make that give you a ratio so that the prop will spin faster than the shaft coming directly out of the engine. ON the LT's the shaft coming directly out of the engine is just extended giving you no ratio.
Again this is more than likely worded all wrong and by no means should you act upon this statement. There are others on here who know much more than I do in this field and hopefully one of them will chime in. But beware there are also many on here that think they know something, but in all reallity don't know jack chit. So if one of these dumbasses post up something just ignore him.

The major brands have spent countless hours doing the same thing
trying different shaft lengths gear ratios and angles of attack....

I am a shameless Go Devil fan - your original post is exactly what led
to the development of the SD design in use today by GoDevil - they have
the longest shaft of all the SD brands to get the prop as far back as is
reasonable to get to more usable water out of the boat's wake... To
give you the most lift to climb slowly and smoothly over logs...

They have also experimented relentlesly on GEAR REDUCTION to spin
larger blades with these engines to maximize mud pushing power...

Once more - the Go Devil surface drive has the longest shaft of any of
the surface drives... You can pick up and move the prop 3 to 6 feet,
you can also apply thrust at almost 90 degrees to "spin around" and find new mud...

The prop on ALL surface drives spin LESS rpm than the motor...

The surface drive is faster cause it slings a bigger blade with more pitch...
But yes the flatter angle of attack helps a little bit too...

Example:
A 23 hp GDLT with a 9x6 goes 22mph on a smaller boat... The GDSD 23hp
would go about 25mph on the same boat with the bigger 12x12 blade
with it's 1.7 to 1 reduction gearing... 1.4 to 1 on the 35hp so 30mph,
with all three turning about the same engine rpm of 3900 or so...

Giga don't think he's interested in what your trying to sell or a SD of any kind. His ? was will a long tail run faster with a parallel shaft!

Plus the GDSD has an angled shaft ( hence the universal joint) so its not any more parallel runing than a PD (angled drive). the closest your going to get to a parallel running shaft would be the GTR ( flat running technology) , MB SD, or the new Bevertail SD.

Its something to think about for sure. But Giga is right about diameter and pitch. No direct drive stock B&S motor will spin a 12x12 prop. So it has to be geared down. This conversation could go on all day. lol

The fact is, it is definitally do-able. Its really just a matter of taking a SS SD frame and extending the drive tube a few feet. other wise you would have to make some type of morphadite double U-joint contraption or lower the engine down onto some type of hunting deck ( like a Hunt or Hesson Drive, but this style tends to swamp the motor with water). I myself would seriously concider a gear reduction, up the prop diameter and pitch.

Sounds like a fun project! might be the next million doller idear! lol Good luck my boy.

I say yes, with the exception of making it a medium. Not as long as a longtail and not as short as a SD.

I know for a fact it would have potenial. I ran Spanish lake a while back with White1 and ended up on a mud flat with stumps and logs every couple of feet and a few inches below the surface. On a slide I can run it all day but stopped I was stuck like chuck. My Prop would get lifted, skeg was getting hung up nearly every time I made any kind of headway. I didn't have enough reach to swing past it.( I would have to push pole forward to get the prop back down) White1 with the GDSD has a longer reach, though he was hanging up too the majority of the time he could lift up and swing over and past it. We all got muddy and used our push poles that day. I think a longtail would have laughed at us . So something with a little more reach I believe it wouldn't have even been an issue.

Something like your thinking of would definitally have its place. The reach of a longtail and the speed of a SD.

It would definately work. Go ahead and try it. But keep us posted and take plenty of pics.

yep dey all got gear reduction in em, but you are reducing da size of da gear on da lower unit side not the engine side the prop turning up less revolutions than the motor makes no sense at all...kinda like someone tryn to dig themselves out of a hole

the pictures are a little weak, but i thought about a reducted lt awhile back. i dont think the angle is that much of an issue. the reduction unit would take some of it out anyway. the major increase would be the prop you can turn.

did the mm manufactures ever try a reducted lt? i know the scavenger is but thay have that auger prop. like apples to oranges on the prop.

AGAIN, a lot of the reason a PD or GT will hold its postion in mud is they are NOT BALANCED. the T&T keeps em where they are and helps them bite down.

i know that, thats what i was sayin. the balanced LT's are harder to KEEP in the mud because they dont have weight or T&T holdin them down in there. Im not sure what this guy is tryin to say?
